The University of Alicante will award the Gold Medal posthumously to Balbino Mancheño

The University of Alicante's Governing Council has unanimously approved today the award of the Gold Medal posthumously to Balbino Mancheño, who was the Director of the Science Park and Dean of the Faculty of Science for eight years.
Balbino Mancheño, who died recently, was a person with great connections with the University of Alicante and the university community wants to acknowledge his devotion to the institution by giving its highest honour: the Gold Medal
The UA gives this honour to people or institutions of outstanding reputation in sciences, literature, scientific research, teaching, artistic creation, sports and solidarity, who have rendered outstanding service to the University of Alicante.

Brief Curriculum
The Alicante Science Park Foundation's Board of Trustees of the Region Valencia, appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry, Balbino Mancheño, as the Director of the University of Alicante's Science Park in March 2011, a position he currently held until his death on 20th January 20, at the age of 53.
Linked to the University of Alicante since its inception. after he finished his studies in chemistry at the University of Alicante, he became a research fellow (1980-1981) to the newly created Department of Chemistry, developing his academic activity and becoming a Professor in 2010. In 1986, he obtained a doctoral degree from the UA with his work on chemical constituents of endemic plants of the region of Valencia. He also developed managerial positions as the Secretary of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences (elected in 2002 and reelected in 2006).
He has worked in the field of organic synthesis, especially in basic and applied research on isolation and structural determination of natural compounds of pharmacological interest, by participating in several research projects as a research collaborator and scientific advisor in structural elucidation, as well as activities supporting their management organization. On the other hand, he has been a member of the University of Alicante's Research Committee, a founding member of the Institute of Organic Synthesis. He has also been a member of the Valencian Council for Universities and Higher Education, advisory body for Education Administration in the Region of Valencia.
In recent years, he has developed a work of scientific support in the management of environmental areas, as a member of several governing boards of national parks of Valencia.
Other activities related to his career are his membership to the CIMAR Board of Directors, Marine Research Centre of Santa Pola, and for 6 years, to the Annual Awards Jury on New Business Ideas, attached to the Business-University Foundation of Alicante (FUNDEUN), sponsored by the major companies and institutions in the province of Alicante.
