The Sports Council acknowledges the University of Alicante as the core of Olympic preparations for London 2012
Alicante, 11th January 2012
The Beach Volleyball Spanish Olympic Team will be training, from December to May, at the University of Alicante
The Spanish Olympic Beach Volleyball Team has selected the University of Alicante as the place of training for the London 2012 Olympic Games for two reasons: the facilities with which it is gifted and scientific work being done by the UA Faculty of Education's team of Physical Activities and Sports Sciences along with the Sports Office. Since last December and up to May 2012, the players training for the Continental Cup, tournament that will provide access to places for the Olympics, will be coached at the UA. The working group consists of the players from Alicante, Raúl Mesa, Inocencio Lario, Cristian García and Francisco Marco. These international players will be trainned under the tutelage of coach Javier Bosma, ex - Olympic medalist in Athens 2004. In the coach work, Dr. José Antonio Pérez Turpín and lecturer Juan José Chinchilla will support him, both from the University of Alicante.
Up to this date, the Beach Volleyball Spanish Olympic Team was only training at a high-performance centre in Tenerife. The inclusion of the University of Alicante as a place of training for the international athletes means a recognition of the quality of the Beach Volleyball Technification Programme launched by the UA and directed by lecturer José Antonio Pérez Turpin.
The Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation is now running the high-performance training for international partners that takes place in Alicante and Tenerife. The goal for which the beach volleyball male couples are already working is to qualify for the Olympic Games in London. The training will cover the months of December 2011 to May 2012, when the teams begin to play pre-Olympic qualifying stages. Both the group that is trained in Alicante and the players who are trained in Tenerife -coached by internationals Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira- seek the Olympic goal under the supervision of national coach, Sixto Jimenez. Both groups will be jointly concentrated in Tenerife at the end of next February.
