The Research Marine Centre (CIMAR) is an active centre, where activities are carried out to KNOW about a way so close and yet so unknown as the marine environment, its biodiversity and its environment, with the aim of TEACHING how to use its resources responsibly and help to PROTECT this fragile ecosystem, contributing to their rational use and management.
The Centre, which is the result of an agreement between the town of Santa Pola and the University of Alicante, was created in 2005, adapting the structure of a former customs guards' barracks built in the 20s (Torre d'Enmig headquarters), with a privileged location at the foot of the fossil coral reef of Santa Pola and a few metrer from the coast.
The Centre has facilities appropriate for the purposes of meeting, teaching and protecting activities: specialized library, research and practiice labs, conference room and exhibition hall on marine life.
All of this makes CIMAR an excellent location for the development of marine research, teaching and environmental education.
