The University of Alicante was created in October 1979 on the structure of the Centre of studies University (CEU), which had begun in 1968. Alicante recovered in this way College suspended in 1834, when closed, after two centuries of existence, its precursor, the University of Orihuela. The University of Orihuela was established by Papal bull in 1545 and kept its doors open for two centuries (1610-1808). The province of Alicante, therefore it has an important University tradition whose heritage wealth gives good account the current school of Santo Domingo, building of the former University of Orihuela, recovered today, thanks to the agreement between the diocese and the University.
In this latest stage College resumed during the 1968-69 with just 230 students to spend now to nearly 33,000 students, the University with a greater proportional growth of students among all the State Spanish.
The University of Alicante, after almost twenty years of existence, introduces a very important potential for the socio-economic development which is a fourth province in total GDP of Spain. Fifty degrees , more than seventy University departments and units and research groups in areas of social sciences and law, experimental, technology, humanities, education and health sciences, five University research institutes are planning a research activity of the most prestigious in the country.
Our University is the first company in the province of Alicante with more 2,000 workers (teachers and services) and a budget about 15 billion pesetas. It is a required reference for many companies with which it has contracts for technical assistance, technology transfer, trainees, postgraduate, continuing education... It is also a point of reference in international relations: conventions, venues, mobility and exchanges, cooperationbetween various innovative in various parts of the world projects.

All this which is considered one of the best campuses in Europe: one million square meters with the best urban design, the most innovative architecture in a framework of environmental excellence (large green areas, landscape design, pedestrian, cultural, sporting, educational areas...) and a wide variety of Services.
This University environment is located in the most strategic area of the province and the Mediterranean Spanish: direct communication with the A-7 (Mediterranean motorway) and the Inland Highway forming crossroads on the edge of the Campus. Five minutes from the capital of the province, 10 of the international airport of el Altet, less than twenty minutes from the main enclaves industrial, less than fifteen minutes from nearby recreational areas (residential, beaches, golf courses...) and a railway line that surrounds the West of the campus and future Park scientific.
In addition to the strong commitment by the innovation and technology, the University of Alicante reaches heights of the most prestigious in the field of its firm commitment to the culture and heritage. One of the finest university museums European Archaeological Park of Alcudia, the best Valencian Renaissance building, University venue for two centuries in Orihuela (1610-1808): The historical University of Orihuela, the medieval Palau Contal de Cocentaina, Benissa Palau houses... lead to a growing reputation in the national and international environment.
In this environment the University aims to progressively set up one of the world's best Parks scientists . It aims to go gradually materializing investments requested for teaching and research equipment and infrastructure that will complete a University infrastructure of first order in the European environment.
