At present, the Horn of Africa faces a serious crisis due to the converging effects of the worst drought in decades and soaring increase of food prices, along with the lingering effects of the armed conflict in Somalia, to which the largest influx of refugees to Kenya and Ethiopia in a decade must be added. About 10 million people are at high risk, including 2.85 million people in Somalia, 3.2 million in Ethiopia and 3.5 million in Kenya.
Urgent actions are needed to prevent the deaths of some 480,000 children with severe malnutrition in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti. About 1,649,000 children in the region suffer from malnutrition and all persons affected by the crisis are threatened by epidemics of measles, diarrhea due to water and pneumonia.
In order to meet the emergency situation described and in order to serve the victims of the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa area, the Vice President for International Relations has decided to make a €10,000 donation to help the funding campaign conducted by the United Nations Fund for Infacia (UNICEF), through its office in the province of Alicante.
