The recording collects a fragment of the posthumous homage celebrated by “Radio París”, in memory of the political José Antonio of Aguirre y Lecube, first Lehendakari of the Basque Government. It was born the 6 of March of 1906, in Bilbao. It was player of the Athletic of Bilbao, graduate in right by the University of Deusto, and militant of the Nationalist Party Basque during the Dictatorship of Cousin of Rivera, militancia that it would not abandon until his death. It exerted like employer of the factory of familiar chocolates and resulted elected Acalde of the village of Guecho with 27 years, at all more instaurarse the II Spanish Republic. It was Deputy to Courts by Navarra in the first republican term of office, and Deputy by Vizcaya in the others two following, whose work was directed mainly to impulsar the editorial and promulgation of the Basque Statute of Autonomy, approved finally the 1 October of 1936, shortly after the explosion of the Spanish Civil War. Aguirre was chosen Lehendakari of the Basque Government six days later, the 7 of October of 1936, from whose charge chaired diverse cabinets of national concentration. During his mandate created likewise the Basque Army (Euzko Gudarostea), formed by batallions of different ideologies. Nevertheless, man of deep religious training, and very influenciado by the Social Doctrine of the Church, never understood that the Spanish Church awarded to the francoist rebellion the character of “Crusade”. In February of 1936, being the situation insostenible for the Republic, had to exile to France, beside Manuel Azaña and Luis Companys, accompanied by Manuel of Irujo, Julio Jauregui, Joseph Tarradellas and Nicolau d’Olwer. From Paris, his more immediate paper and leader of the Basque government in the exile, will be the one to organise to the more than ciento fifty thousand political refugees, putting to the service of the allies after the explosion of the II World-wide War. The overwhelming defeat of France by Germany did him displace of form clandestina by Europe, until attaining exile to U.S. with his wife and children. Finished the contention, returned to Europe. Soon it saw that the allies went to tolerate to the francoist dictatorship of pragmatic form, by what his political work focalizará in three distinct slopes: impulsar the European Movement, impulsar and strengthen the resistance against the Franco regime, inside and out of the Basque Country, and reorganise and enrich the Basque nationalism. It died victim of a cardiac attack, during his exile in Paris, the 22 of March of 1960, when only had fifty-six years of age. His rests were moved to the village vascofrancés of Saint Juan of Luz, in the Atlantic Pyrenees, where received sepultura. Him sucedió in the charge Jesús María of Leizaola Sánchez. Nowadays recognise that his work had big influence in the negotiations that gave place to the current Autonomic State.
On the other hand, deduce that the author of the speech of homage pronounced could be the canónigo Alberto Onaindía, more known like “The Father Olaso”, personal friend of José Antonio of Aguirre, that there was oficiado his funeral in the Church of Saint Pierre du Gros Caillou. The “Father Olaso” it was one of the few surviving of the shootings of Basque priests perpetrados by the francoist. Exiled in London, turned into one of the most important collaborators of “Radio París” and more combativos front to the dictatorship, between 1946 and 1957, until the pressures of the Government of Madrid attained his cessation in the emisora. Of this way, the historical importance of the recording is double.
