"Francia de Hoy" (France of Today) was an interesting radio contest of the Spanish radio broadcasts of the French Radio-Television, issued with the sponsorship of the Cité-Club Universitaire of Paris (presumably academic body of which we have hardly found any information). The running of the contest was simple: during a period of time previously fixed, the emisora established a subject, and the listeners that wanted to take part had to send a composition about it. When the period of reception of texts finished, a jury consisting of executives of "Radio París" and the Cité-Club chose the winners; hence, it was a participation "on deferred", through the ordinary post. The scope of the contest varied as so did its editions. It was usually aimed at the residents in France (French, but especially Spanish), although in occasions it extended to the listeners who lived in Spain, and even to the ones in diverse countries of Latin America.
Regarding the prizes, they were usually based in the granting of scholarships for assistance to courses, either in Paris, in the Provence, in Spain, or in some centres of Latin America, according to the rules mentioned above. They were generally courses for the improvement of the language (French for Spanish speakers, Spanish for French people). On the other hand, although the scholarships of the stay consisted of a month of length, and were usually conceded to the three better interventions of each edition of the program, there were cases in which the three prizes were brought together in an only scholarship for an only winner. That is to say, although the dynamics were usually the same in all the programs, the rules could vary, and in fact did it.
On the other hand, the thematic proposals were used to be highly topical issues: usually on subjects related to France (although not exclusively), almost always in its most europeist aspects. Cultural, social, historical, political and economic aspects, that constituted the reality of the time. The sixties constituted a convulsed period, full of changes and transformations, with an almost universal scope. A process of changes and transformations in which "Radio París" it was inmerse, specially interested in the perception that the listeners may have about this subjects, being this contest a form to keep registered all this. Thus, "Francia de Hoy" was a contest treating several aspects: it was not only cultural and pedagogical, but also a sociological contest, in a period in which there was big development of the Social Sciences and often taking an anti-Francoist line -so typical of the radio broadcast-, since many of the subjects were banned in Spain.
Besides, the prizes favoured the coming and going of people (and therefore, of ideas) between distinct centres, regions and countries, anticipating -relatively speaking, of course- to programmes like the Erasmus, for example.
There have been kept a total of twenty-four programmes of "Francia de Hoy", issued between 1959 and 1966, although it is unknown how long did it lasted on air. There is no doubt about the importance of this recordings: no only because they decipher an important part of the history and nature of the radio station, but also of the history of Europe, France and the countries of Spanish tongue. Specially from the perspective of its citizens, not as a proper sociological study, obviously (in definite, it was just a radio contest), but as a fundamental complement to the researches made in that period.
