Alicante and Oran close ties at the University of Alicante within the framework of the 1st Hispanic-Algerian Symposium

The twinning of the Mediterranean cities of Oran (in Algeria) and Alicante in Spain, along with their long and rich historical and contemporary relationships, has led the area of the University of Alicante's Arabic and Islamic Studies to start the 1st Hispanic-Algerian Symposium. The meeting begins as a forum for rapprochement between the two countries and between the two cities, with the aim of establishing closer academic relations with Algeria, a country which hosts language assistants from our university. The Symposium will be inaugurated by the UA President, Ignacio Jiménez Raneda, the Algerian Ambassador to Spain, Mohammed Haneche and the and director of the Mediterranean House, Yolanda Parrado.
Under the motto "Today's Algeria: gender, culture and society," the University of Alicante will talk about the relations Spain-Algeria / Alicante-Oran, the Algerian women's experience since the independence of Algeria to the present day and the socio-cultural and Algerian politics on 25, 26 and 27 October.
The relations Alicante-Oran will be the central topic on Monday 25, viewed from different approaches, such as historic, architectural or humanitarian. For this purpose, the architect and director of the Cervantes Institute of Oran, Javier Galvan, and Jose Maria Troncoso, general coordinator of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency in Algeria and Población Saharaoui.
The experiences of women will take place on Tuesday, 26 with interventions from the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Languages and Arts at the University Es-Senia, in Oran, Zoubida Khelladi, the lawyer, author and former director of UNESCO's women rights, Wassyla Tamzali. In addition, open discussion with the director and scriptwriter Djamila Sahraoui, author of the documentary The Moitié du Ciel d'Allah (1995) and the film Barakat (2006), after the screening of the exerts.
The analysis of the socio-cultural and political Algerian Wednesday's session will feature the intervention of the journalist and chronicler of Le Quotidien d'Oran, Kamel Daoud, with his lecture on the Algerian press and its socio-political impact in society. The day ends with a Raï music concert offered by Algerian Cheb Faisal, at the Amphitheatre of the MUA.
The Conference will be held in morning sessions, at the Lecture Building II (Campus San Vicente del Raspeig and in afternoon sessions at the University Venue in Alicante. The Women's Studies Centre, the Mediterranean House, the Algerian Embassy in Madrid, the Department of Modern Languages Studies and Culture Secretariat have collaborated in the organization of this Symposium. Eva Lapiedra, lecturer of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Alicante, and Ana Marco, foreign language assistant in Oran and former student of the UA Degree in Arabic Studies are the coordinators of the conference.
