Lecturer at the University of Alicante, Tomás Mazón, will be the new director of the Chair for Tourism Studies 'Pedro Zaragoza Orts'

Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Alicante and a member of Tourism Research Institute, Tomás Mazon, has been appointed as the director of the newly created Chair for Tourism Studies 'Pedro Zaragoza Orts', during a meeting held this morning at the City Hall of Benidorm by the Mayor, Agustin Navarro, the UA Vice President for Institutional Relations, Aránzazu Calzada, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Victoria Palau, the Director of the Institute for Tourism Studies, Fernando Vera and Nuria Montes, in representation of the Association Hosbec (Hotel Association of Benidorm and Costa Blanca).
The meeting took place at the office of the Mayor of Benidorm at the end of the opening of the 14th International Tourism Forum organized by the Benidorm Tourism Research Institute and, in this edition, sports tourism will be the central topic.
Tomas Mazon, will be officially appointed as the director of the Chair in a few days, and thereafter, shall perform a programme of activities including the organization of courses and seminars related to tourism issues, with special attention to the area of the Costa Blanca and Benidorm as well as lectures and presentations on tourism, along with the performance of studies and research on this topic.
Last July, the University of Alicante, the city hall of Benidorm, the Valencian Agency of Tourism and Hosbec Association signed an agreement for the creation of this Chair that will be based in the city of Benidorm, at the Invat.tur building, of the Valencian Agency of Tourism, with academic and research staff from the University of Alicante. Also, the University, through the Tourism Research Institute, will assist in the training and research activities, and will establish the mechanisms for academic recognition.
The Chair for Tourism Studies 'Pedro Zaragoza Orst', has been created with the aim of stating the strategic relevance of tourism to the economy and society in the province of Alicante and also in the interest of the member institutions for the study and investigation of the characteristics and problems of tourism.
OPENING THE 14th INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FORUM IN BENIDORM
The opening ceremony of the 14th International Tourism Forum has taken place this morning, organized by the UA Benidorm Tourism Research Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and the city hall of Benidorm, with the sponsorship of the Hotel Business Association of Benidorm and the Costa Blanca (HOSBEC), Telefonica, Caja Mediterráneo and Benidorm Promoción. This year the forum is devoted to the binomial Sport-Tourism.
The UA Vice President for Institutional Relations, Aránzazu Calzada, has addressed to the public audience to ensure that "sport is still a growing market segment that has to be taken into account in tourism policy". Similarly, Calzada, wanted to emphasize "the strong commitment that the University of Alicante has with the tourism sector as a strategic sector of enormous significance and impact on our social and economic environment. Evidence of this commitment is the recent creation of the Chair for Tourism Studies 'Pedro Zaragoza Orts', at the UA.

Born in Alicante, on 15 January 1950. Academic Secretary of the Department of Sociology at the University of Alicante since 1998 and member of the Alicante Municipal Tourism Board Member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Papers de Tourisme" and the scientific journal "Gran Tour". Member of Tourism Research Institute at the University of Alicante.
Graduated with "CUM LAUDE" for his doctoral thesis “La configuración del paisaje urbano de Alicante” ("Configuration of the urban landscape of Alicante".) Lecturer of the Master's Programme in Tourism Management and Planning and the's Programme in Local Development and Territorial Innovation.
