UA's Research Group OBETS presents the results of a research work on the polítical size of intra-European mobility before the European Parliament
Alicante, 26th February 2013
The research group OBETS, assigned to the University of Alicante's Interuniversity Institute for Social Development and Peace, has presented before the European Parliament in Brussels, on Wednesday, 20th February, the results of MOVEACT Project“All citizens Now”: Intra-EU Mobility and political participation of British, Germans, Poles and Romanians in Western and Southern Europe.
The project, funded by the European Commission (DG Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship), aims to determine the social and civic participation of British, Germans, Poles and Romanians living in France, Greece, Italy and Spain. The University of Alicante, through its Research Group OBETS, is part of an international research team where researchers from the University of Chieti and Pescara (Italy), the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy - ELIAMEP (Greece), the François Rabelais University (France) and the Centro Europeo per Ricerche e Studi Sociali - CEURISS (Italy) participate. The project manager in Spain is UA Professor Antonio Alaminos Chica and the overall project is led by Ettore Recchi.
In the project's results, a potential involvement of European residents in these destination countries is observed. However, political participation need not only overcome the differences that these people face between the political systems and political cultures of their countries of origin, in contrast to the target ones, but also go through administrative barriers that the institutions of their destination countries apply, as it is their record in the census, the registration of associations, etc., which limit the exercise of the political rights of these European citizens.
