The UA is pioneer in the implementation of a video remote interpreting service for deaf people
Alicante, 28th October 2013
Framed within the events organized around the International Day of the Deaf, the University of Alicante presents a pioneer online video interpreting service (SVisual) at the secretary’s offices of its seven centres. It is a virtual platform that allows deaf or hearing disabled people as well as hearing people to communicate with each other through a sign language video interpreter. In this way, users can exchange information with complete independence and autonomy without requiring the interpreter to be physically present.
On Mondays, from 9 am to 1 pm, those interested will be able to use this service from all the secretary’s offices in our centres with the aim of integrating deaf people into all the university areas. The proposal arises from an agreement between UA and the Deaf Federation of the Valencia Region (FESORD) to develop a joint action within the Healthy University Project, assigned to the Office of the Vice President for Campus Facilities and Sustainability.
SVisual service will be inaugurated tomorrow, Tuesday, 29th October, at 10:30 am, at the Higher Polytechnic School’s Assembly Hall, by Rafael Muñoz, Vice President for Campus Facilities and Sustainability, Alvaro Prieto, Regional Director of Social Welfare, Amparo Minguet FESORD Chairwoman, Concha Díaz, Chairwoman of the Confederation of Deaf People (CNSE) and Miguel Tamarit, Chairman of the Association of the Deaf in L' ALACANTI area (Apesoa).
Throughout the day, the UA will host various activities such as a gathering on an environmental issue ““Los residuos no son basura” (Waste is not garbage) with the attendance of sign language interpreters at 11.30 am in the same hall at the Higher Polytechnic School .
Role playing games on the day of the deaf person at the UA Campus and round-tables on deaf people in the field of education, employment, accessibility, seniors and social scope will also be open to the entire university community, at Plaza de la Igualdad from 1pm to 2 pm and from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm
