The University of Alicante has presented, this morning, the athletes that will represent the institution in regional and national competitions this season, with a mass event that brought together some hundred and thirty athletes, plus coaches, sponsors and members of the university community. The event is part of the activities included in the “Welcome Week at the UA 2013” .

The President of the UA , Manuel Palomar, the Vice President for Culture, Sports and Language Policies, Carles Cortés, and María José Rodríguez, delegate to the UA President for Gender Equality Policies, have welcomed and presented the teams in an event which, for the second year, brought together all the athletes of the UA.

Palomar said a few words to the audience, emphasizing the firm commitment of the University of Alicante for university sports as an added value for the integral education and training of students. Similarly, the UA President has announced that they are preparing a comprehensive sports programme in the UA for this new academic year, which will be focussed on three areas: recruitment of university athletes, funding for university athletes and sports elite programmes. The planning of this new programme is being carried out in collaboration with the Research Group "Physical Activity and Sports Sciences", directed by lecturer José Antonio Pérez Turpin along with the Sports Service. Finally, Manuel Palomar has expressed his appreciation to the UA athletes for the many victories achieved last season.

The delegate to the UA President for gender equality policies, María José Rodríguez, announced that "on the request of the UA Board of Directors, the 2nd Equality Gender Plan will include a sectorial action for the management and promotion of equality in sports". The University of Alicante has, thus, become the first Spanish public university that includes sports and physical activity as a cornerstone in the development of equality policies. Finally, Rodríguez added " while recognizing the enormous transformation experienced by women in sports in recent times, there are still many aspects that evidence a different reality for men and women athletes”.

The Vice President, Carles Cortés, has reaffirmed the strong commitment to supporting sports at the University and has presented the 12 federated teams, that is Diving, Men's Football, Women's Five-a-side Football, Half Marathon, Orienteering, Men’s and Women’s Rowing , Men’s and Women’s Rugby, Triathlon, Beach Volleyball and Women’s Volleyball.
