World experts face at the UA how to translate and teach set phrases from Spanish, English and French

The 4th International Conference on Phraseology, Translation and Teaching Methods will be held on 25th, 26th and 27th September, 2013

Alicante, 24th September 2013

“Coger a alguien con el culo al aire” is a very common phrase in Spain. However, this set phrase, worthy of being institutionalized and characterized by its opacity, and to which the experts call ‘diatopical expression’, poses difficulties in its translation into other languages. Even in Latin America,  the word "coger” and all expressions containing this word have a sexual meaning. For these reasons, in order to discuss the problems of the treatment of phraseology in the fields of translation and teaching methods, the University of Alicante celebrates the 4th International Conference on Phraseology, Translation and Teaching Methods.

The meeting brings together a select group of experts from Spain, Germany, Belgium, Ivory Coast, France, Italy, Mexico, Tunisia and Madagascar, on 25th, 26th and 27th September 2013 and the Aula Magna of the UA Faculty of Arts. The organization of the conference has been led by Pedro Mogorrón Huerta, Director of the Department of Translation and Interpretating and main researcher of the UA Group FRASYTRAM. The other research groups and research centres involved in the organization are: GRIALE (UA), PRAGMATEMA (Autonomous University of Barcelona, UMR 7187 LDI (Université Paris 13), UCM 930235, Phraseology and Paremiology (Complutense University), LEXYTRAD, HUM-106 (University of Málaga), and the groups FRASEONET GI-2061 and FRASESPAL, both coming from the University Santiago de Compostela.

The experts, among whom we can highlight within the national scope, Gloria Corpas, Manuel Sevilla o Mario García – Page, and J. R Ladmiral, Salah Mejri or J. C Anscombre from the international scope will address, among other topics, the limited presence of phrases, sayings, word combinations or collocations in dictionaries, the loss of information that occurs in the act of translation, or the existence of thousands of diatopic forms in the case of Spanish, English and French that are official languages in many countries.
