The UA joins the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) as a full member
83 universities from 20 countries make up UNIMED, with the aim of integrating the two sides of the Mediterranean through scientific and educational cooperation
Alicante, 10th September 2013
The University of Alicante, through the Office of the Vice President for International Relations, has just joined the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) as a full member. The UA has thus become the third Spanish university that joins this international university association, along with those of Barcelona and Granada.
Now, with the recent entry of the UA, UNIMED is made up of 83 universities from 20 countries and has as its main aim to develop scientific and educational cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region, with the goal of contributing to the integration process between the two Mediterranean shores.
Juan Llopis, Vice President for International Relations of the UA, states that "the Mediterranean area is key to the internationalization process of the University of Alicante, both for its geographical location and common interests and for the academic and research growth that the universities in this area have experienced”.
Among the countries integrating UNIMED we find - apart from Spain - France, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Jordan, Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey, to which Israel and Palestine have been added with universities from both countries that are also members of UNIMED. Through this partnership the UA opens a new line of collaboration with all these countries.
UNIMED collaborates in different fields with the universities within this network among which we find cultural heritage (both tangible and intangible), economy, energy, environment, water resources management, transportation, health, media, new technologies, history, agriculture and tourism. Also, this association develops activities on behalf of the partner universities, such as the promotion of its international dimension, supports the mobility of students, researchers and academic staff within the Euro-Mediterranean region and establishes thematic sub-networks promoting scientific cooperation in specific fields or the training of faculty and administration staff, among other activities.
