The UA Governing Council gives the go-ahead for the creation of a joint degree in Law and Criminology
Poet Raúl Zurita and economist Gabriel Tortella will be awarded Honoris Causa degrees by the UA

The Governing Council has issued unanimously a favorable report on the approval of the proposal from the Faculty of Law to create a double degree unifying the study programmes in Law and Criminology. The process is now in the hands of the Social Council of the University of Alicante that will celebrate its plenary session on Wednesday, 16 April.
According to the Dean of Law, Pedro Femenía, the creation of this joint degree (DECRIM), "allows us to stand out from the rest of universities”. It is the result of a common request made by the students of the faculty “in two symbolic and largely recognised undergraduate programmes, whose demand is sustained and increasing every year”, he said.
During the session, the conferment of honorary degrees on economist Gabriel Tortella and poet Raúl Zurita by the University of Alicante, on the proposal from the faculties of Business and Economics, and Arts respectively, was also approved, The UA President has expressed his intention of making this conferment ceremony coincide with "relevant events of both faculties"
Over 6,000 places for new students
The Governing Council has also approved the proposal of the Vice President for Students on the upper limit of students to be admitted for the academic year 2014-2015. The document approved states a total of 6,030 undergraduate places for new students and 2,302 for official master’s degrees. According to the Vice President, Nuria Grané, the proposal was drawn from the data in the annual reports of the curricula verified by ANECA. Considering the imminent approval, the data for the new joint degree in Law and Criminology has been included, which will start with a total of 70 places. The most significant novelty affects the undergraduate degree in Architecture, which will be renamed as Fundamentals of Architecture if they meet the deadline for modifications.
