UA Professor Carmen Nájera Domingo, has been awarded the 'Gascó Oliag' professional merit medal
Alicante, 4 November 2014
Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Alicante, Carmen Nájera Domingo, has been awarded the Gascó Oliag Professional Merit Medal in its 2014 edition. This award is the highest awarded by the Chemists’ Professional Association in Valencia region (ICOQCV).
The awarding ceremony will take place on 15th November 2014, in the city of Valencia, in the context of the celebration of St. Albert the Great, patron saint of sciences (natural sciences, chemical sciences and exact sciences).
Carmen Nájera Domingo is co-founder and technical director of Medalchemy SL, a TBC dedicated to the preparation of pharmaceuticals (APIs) since 2002. Also, her current research work is focused, especially in asymmetric catalysis using chiral catalysts that allow conducting reactions leading to a single enantiomer. Enantiomer is understood as the same molecules that cannot be superimposed, and yet have a mirrored relationship between them. These types of substances are very important especially in the pharmaceutical industry.
Her resume includes other awards received such as the "Organic Chemistry Award 2006" of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, "2006 Rosalind Franklin International Lectureship", from the English Royal Society and the SCF 2010 French-Spanish Prize, from the French Chemists’ Association. In 2010, she also received the award Alicantinos en la Onda, from Onda Cero, in the scientific category and the VIP recognition in the field of science and research in Alicante in 2012, from the newspaper "Información".
She is a member of the scientific committee of several international journals as ChemCatChem, Synthesis, Synlett, European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Tetrahedon: Asymmetry, Reports in Organic Chemistry and Letters in Organic Chemistry. In October 2010, she was appointed as a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and in April 2012, as a full member in the same institution (www.rac.es). In 2012 she was named an active member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. She has published over 320 papers in international journals, 20 book chapters and 6 patents with an index h = 56 and has directed 40 doctoral theses. She has given over 150 lectures at national and foreign conferences and institutions.
