The building donated by banking entity Banco Sabadell and located on number 40 of San Fernando street, was defined by UA President Manuel Palomar as a "new space for socially responsible knowledge". The assignment has been signed for 10 years, yet with the aim of opening the extension in time, as stated by chairman of Banco Sabadell Foundation, Miquel Molins, and was symbolised by the unveiling of a plaque located in the building hall. The ceremony was attended by Banco Sabadell regional director Jaime Matas and UA management team.

The building, that dates back from 1892 with a surface of around 6,000 m2, was opened within the context of the appointment of Catalan economist and historian Gabriel Tortella as a honorary Doctor, who focused his speech on the Catalan economy of the 18th century. His sponsor, prof. Javier Vidal, in charge of the laudation has defined him as a brilliant academician, rigorous researcher and exemplary citizen concerned and committed to his time, who has contributed to social progress, democratic coexistence and the improvement of the education of their fellow citizens, who also highlighted his career as a master.

Tortella thanked the University of Alicante and especially the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences for having allowed him to be joining this faculty of distinguished Doctors.

During his speech, the UA President has devoted a few words to the late Professor Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit, a UA Honoris Causa Doctor and father of modern Catalan Philology, who recently died at age 94. Palomar recalled us the strategic priorities ruling his term of office and insisted on his commitment to strengthen ties with the surrounding context to make entrepreneurship and the labour market integration of our graduates easier. UA President concluded by stating that today's event in the new building and the incorporation of new honorary doctor Professor Tortella strengthens our commitment to citizenship and the transfer of knowledge for the benefit of society.

An urban Campus

In a meeting prior to the honorary ceremony held with the media, Manuel Palomar explained that the new university building, which aims to be known as "San Fernando, 40", will be used for academic, educational and cultural purposes, which is considered essential to help create a true golden mile of culture in the heart of Alicante. Apart from assembly halls for all types of university events and study rooms, the building will be given a space for international students and another permanent space aimed at promoting gender equality policies. The new building will be directed by Prof.Josefina Bueno, who also leads the university venue in Alicante city and both buildings will constitute what the UA President has coined as "an urban campus".

The building will be open to the public from Monday, 1 December at 8 am. So far, a study room has been made available on the first floor, but the goal is to go increasingly opening other facilities.
