The UA is, for the first time, one of the 200 best universities worldwide in Chemistry
According to the 2014 Shanghai academic ranking, which compares 20,000 higher education centres
Alicante, 8 September 2014
The Academic Ranking of World Universities - ARWU, commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, ranks the University of Alicante in the top 200 in the world in the field of Chemistry for the first time. This datum reveals the intense research and teaching work at the UA Departments of Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
According to Enrique Herrero, Director of the Research Office, it is very satisfying that the University of Alicante is among the top 200 in the world in the field of chemistry, as it is a recognition to the work carried out by the institution and in particular by its researchers in this area. Specifically, the research being conducted on the UA ranges from basic research in nanomaterials such as new materials, catalysis, electrochemistry and spectroscopy, to applied research in synthesis of new compounds and drugs, adhesives, food analysis, improving processes to reduce environmental impacts and the treatment of residues and contaminants.
More than 150 people work in the research groups involved, including teachers, Ph.Ds, graduate students and technical staff. Herrero states that the high reputation of our researchers is supported by international awards, the number of research projects we have with foreign universities, participation in international scientific committees and high impact publications signed by researchers at the UA. In this regard, the UA is provided, other than work teams, with high-level equipment available to the research community to make their work easier.
Prepared by Jiao Tong University in China, the Shanghai ranking of 2014 compares 20,000 higher education centres worldwide.
ARWU takes into account indicators such as the number of Nobel prizes and Fields medals awarded, as well as highly cited researchers and articles published in Nature or Science over the last ten years. It also takes into account the universities with a significant amount of articles indexed by Science Citation Index - Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).
It is not the first time that the University of Alicante leads the lists of some of the most prestigious rankings in the world. This year, in the 473rd position, the UA was ranked among the top 500 in the world according to CWTS Leiden Ranking 2014. This ranking is internationally regarded as the "more academic" since it measures the global scientific activity of the 750 best universities.
In this classification, in the field of Social Sciences, the University of Alicante was regarded as the second of all Spanish universities listed and the first in the region of Valencia. In this regard, in the field of Natural Sciences, the UA is ranked fifth among the Spanish universities and second in the region of Valencia.
