The University of Alicante strengthens its presence in the Vinalopó county with the creation of two new university venues in Elda and Petrer
Alicante. Thursday, 10 December 2015
University of Alicante, Manuel Palomar, has signed several agreements this morning with Ruben Alfaro and Alfonso Lacasa, mayors of the town councils of Elda and Petrer, respectively, for the creation of two new campuses. With the new signing, "a time of great wealth and opportunity is open to get even closer to our territory in order to seek, meet and grow richer with its singularities" UA President said, who announced the launch of a Vinalopo network of university venues with which the presence of the academic institution in the area will be strengthened.
Both mayors agreed that the creation of these two new venues "both municipalities settle off a debt with the University of Alicante, the university community of which has a large number of students and staff from this area". Also, both have emphasised the mediating role that the academic institution will have "in bringing political cooperation between the two municipalities”, which has been traditionally claimed by citizens and, according to both mayors, "it symbolically starts from the signing of this agreement with the University”.
Lacasa noted that "opportunities should be offered in this area not only for culture and academia, but also for a coherent development by enhancing the economy". Meanwhile, Alfaro stressed "the great opportunities that have been opened up by the new policy of university venues by incorporating larger and more relevant cities, as it is the case of Elda and Petrer". The Mayor of Elda admitted to being "committed and satisfied to start this project with such a collaborative spirit between Elda and Petrer, each of them with leftist and progressive governing teams. "We must use all the tools to meet this common challenge for these two municipalities where citizens are not wondering themselves which one they belong to on a daily basis”, mayor of Petrer asserted.
In that regard, Palomar said that although both venues — born with the support of Caixa Petrer banking entity — share the same geographical space, "they have their own idiosyncrasies and culture that should be strengthened to become a differential fact". "Being in the age of knowledge and education innovation as we are, It is such initiatives that allow us to get it closer and the territory fed back with it directly". UA President thanked the confidence placed in the University, which, he said “will be returned with our commitment to training, teaching, culture and research”. "This is the start of a common path and now it is the turn of the two city councils to submit proposals which we can move forward together with" Palomar said. .
