Alicante, 1 July 2015
As of today and until Friday 3 July, the University of Alicante will host the 2nd Interpreting Seminars in collaboration with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) in California.
During these sessions, a select group of 22 students from ten Spanish universities will attend the different master classes on simultaneous and consecutive interpreting with professors Leire Carbonell and Cas Shulman-Mora from MIIS, as well as a public service interpreting session (legal, police, medical, etc.). The public service interpreting session will be taught by Melissa Wallace, PhD from the University of Texas at San Antonio, expert in this field of interpreting. In addition, the speakers will give talks on the professional world of high-level interpreters and self-improvement techniques.
These seminars are designed so that the best interpreting students from Spanish universities can learn about the abilities of high-level interpreter trainers in a prestigious institution such as MIIS.
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey is an academic training institute at postgraduate level whose programmes have an international approach. In particular, in 2009 the United Nations named the institute the best training centres for professional translators and interpreters in the world.
In this second edition, MIIS has given two grants with a value of between 15 and 30 thousand euros each one, awarded to the best students of the seminar. On this occasion, students come from the universities of Alicante, Valencia, Jaume I, Granada, Pablo de Olavide (Seville), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Vigo, Salamanca, Málaga and Murcia.
An example of success
One of the professors, Leire Carbonell, is a graduate from the University of Alicante. When she finished her studies, she did a postgraduate programme at MIIS and currently works at this centre as a professional interpreter. In over ten years of professional experience, Leire Carbonell has worked with elite and high-level organisations and institutions of her profession. In particular, she became a certified interpreter at the United Nations a year ago.
