Key figures in Spanish and Latin American politics and economy to gather at the University of Alicante on the occassion of Sanguinetti's honorary degree award

Former Prime Ministers, businesspeople, politicians and senior international organisation officers will participate in the 22nd Círculo de Montevideo plenary meeting in the days following the Doctor Honoris Causa ceremony


Alicante, Tuesday 13 October 2015

Over twelve former Prime Ministers from Latin American countries and Spain (including Felipe González, Ricardo Lagos and Belisario Betancur), businesspeople (Carlos Slim, Alejandro Bulgheroni and Enrique Manhard) politicians and senior officers within international organisations (Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, José Antonio Ocampo and Rebeca Grynspan), as well as academicians Alain Touraine and Natalio Botana, will participate in the events organised by the University of Alicante on the occasion of the award of Doctor Honoris Causa degree to Julio María Sanguinetti.

Celebrations will begin on Thursday 15 October with the investiture ceremony, to be held at noon in the Auditorium, and will continue on 16 and 17 October with the 22nd Círculo de Montevideo plenary meeting. The Foundation is chaired by Mr Sanguinetti, President of the Republic of Uruguay 1985-1990 and 1995-2000.

José Manuel Canales, Professor of Political and Administration Science at the University of Alicante and sponsor of the new Doctor Honoris Causa, will give the laudatio. Testimonials of distinguished figures will be shown during the ceremony, which will end with the traditional speech by University President Manuel Palomar. 


Plenary meeting

This Círculo de Montevideo encounter, to be held under the name The Crisis of Representative Democracy Governance, will have a wide programme of conferences given by several members of the Foundation, including "The Welfare State and the Multimedia State", "Global financial governance", "Changes in competition paradigms", "The new global re-balancing“ and "A state's undeniable functions".

All sessions will be held in the Auditorium, and entrance will be free up to venue capacity. Both the award ceremony and the symposium will be streamed live at

The inauguration ceremony will be held on 16 October at 9.30 a.m., with the presence of University President Manuel Palomar, Julio María Sanguinetti (President of Círculo de Montevideo Foundation) and Carlos Slim (Corporate President of Círculo de Montevideo). The morning session will end at noon, and then participants will take the traditional family portrait and enjoy a lunch break until 3.30 p.m.

On 17 October, last day of the symposium, conferences will be held from 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m., after which there will be time for conclusions and the floor will be open for attendees to pose their questions. Julio María Sanguinetti, Carlos Slim, Belisario Betancur, Felipe González, Ricardo Lagos, Rebeca Grynspan, Alejandro Bulgheroni, Natalio Botana, Enrique Manhard, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón and Alain Touraine will participate in this session.
