UA will award an honorary degree to Stephen Greenblatt, an international authority on Shakespeare and Cervantes
Within the context of the fourth centennial of the death of both authors
Also, a Golden Laurel will be presented to Ricardo Senabre posthumously

The University of Alicante governing council has unanimously decided this morning to award a honorary degree to Professor Stephen Greenblatt, from Harvard University and a Golden Laurel -posthumously- to Ricardo Senabre Sempere, professor, theorist and literary critic.
Greenblatt's inauguration was proposed by the Department of English Studies with the unanimous support of the Faculty of Arts Board. This is why the University of Alicante joins this international celebration that will be held around 23 April next year on the occasion of the celebration of the fourth centennial of the death of the most international authors of all times Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Professor Greenblatt is a leading and renowned figure in literary criticism and American culture worldwide with several works published where the honoured authors are connected. His most outstanding contributions stress the concept of "cultural mobility”, which he coined in 2009 and is focused on collaborative nature and the need to transfer to society all the activities develop anywhere in the world into the field of humanities.
The proposal to award the Golden Laurel to Ricardo Senabre Sempere was reported by the UA President to the Governing Council. With this award, the University of Alicante marks its "outstanding national and international reputation in the field of science, literature, scientific research, teaching, artistic creation, sports and solidarity of people and institutions". Master of several generations of philologists, teachers and critics, Senabre, had a leading role in the birth and consolidation of the University of Extremadura. A native of Alcoy, he was awarded significant distinctions such as the Commander of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise, the Medal of Honour of the International University Menéndez Pelayo, the Award for Scientific Excellence of the University of Salamanca and an honorary doctorate from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Recently deceased, Senabre will be unanimously granted this distinction by the Governing Council in a ceremony to be held next November in his hometown.
Amongst other internal matters, all approved unanimously, the UA president reported to the Governing Council a request for a meeting that would be held in October with all Valencian university presidents and the regional departments of Finance and Education. Palomar expressed the intention for universities and the regional minister to start working on the creation of a new economic model that allows for stable and adequate funding.
The meeting, first regular session in the academic year of 2015-2016, took place this morning in the boardroom of the Administration and Council building.
