The University of Alicante and the City Council of Alcoy have signed this morning the agreement to implement a teaching unit of the undergraduate degree in Child Education. The signing ceremony took place in the UA President’s office with both Mayor and Councilor for Culture of Alcoy Antonio Francés and Manuel Gomicia respectively. The ceremony was presided over by UA President Manuel Palomar with the attendance of Vice President for Studies Planning and Training Actions Enrique Herrero, Vice President of the Office from Culture, Sports and Languages Carles Cortés, Faculty of Education Dean José María Esteve and Deputy Registrar María Dolores Lozano.
As explained by both parties, the agreement aims to meet the demand for this undergraduate degree both in the city of Alcoy and nearby towns, in the l'Alcoià county, "densely populated areas from where around 16% of the Faculty of Education current students come".
According to several surveys on the preferences of high school students, this one remains among the most demanded degrees, as reported by Antonio Pérez. Also, UA president Manuel Palomar stated that the undergraduate degree will be ready between January and February next year. Administrative and bureaucratic issues are almost finished and it is only some technical details, — such as Wi-Fi connection, signalling, and furniture and equipment — that will be soon fixed. A joint committee made up by two members from each institution will be responsible for overseeing both the implementation and the development of the degree which is expected to be be launched for the 2018-19 academic year with a total of 50 enrolment places. As assured by Dean of Education José María Esteve, "the teaching staff has already been assigned and most of the teaching activity will be conducted in Catalan."
A commitment has been made for the city council to transfer two of its halls (with capacity for 50 students), a computer room and a general-use room. The UA venue in Alcoy will be based in the building that hosted the Commerce Chamber formerly. Both the UA President and the Mayor of Alcoy have shown that their interest in a joint visit around the facilities and finally presenting a project with a growing demand in the inland counties. One step away from a final date, both parties believe that the presentation could be carried out before spring next year.
