Alicante. 01 December 2017
The presentation ceremony of the Golden Laurel —highest distinction awarded by the University of Alicante— will be presented to dancer and choreographer from Alcoy Sol Picó at the Alicante Theatre Nuria Espert Hall on Monday at 6.30 pm.
UA President will be in charge of presiding over an event in which University Registrar Esther Algarra will also participate, along with some local authorities, such as mayor of Alcoy Toni Francés, Alicante Theatre director Francesc Sanguino and expert in theatre teaching methods Asún Noales, who will be reading the laudation for the awardee.
The Golden Laurel is a distinction granted by the UA to people with an excellent national or international prestige in the field of sciences, scientific research, literature, artistic creation, sports and community services.
Choreographer and dancer from Alcoy and moved to Barcelona Sol Picó is a sound expert in contemporary dance, a discipline that can be intensely felt throughout her choreographic work. She graduated from Alicante Music School Òscar Esplà and finished her studies in Barcelona, Paris and New York. In 1988, she joined dance company Danza Robadura, however, it has been with her own dance company that took its name after the dancer’s name (Sol Picó, created in 1993) that she has developed her very personal style.
Some of the awards Sol Picó has been presented are: Spanish National Dance Award 2016 (creation category); several Max Awards in Performing Arts (best dance performance, best choreography and best female dancer for Bésame el Cáctus in 2002 and 2003, best performance and best choreography for La mujer manca in 2004, best performance for Sirena a la Plancha, best choreography for Paella Mixta in 2005 and best choreography for El Llac dels mosques in 2009, as well Spanish National Award in Catalonia in 2004.
Also, Sol Picó has a solid commitment to our University - a connection that remains over time - through her creativity in the mixture of artistic languages: participation in several culture series, performances at the UA Auditorium, performances at its Museum, as well as exhibitions such as El Vol del Gat, which fuses literature, painting and dance around the novel with the same name.
