The University of Alicante and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), have signed a collaboration agreement for the creation of a Centre for Catalan Studies on the West Coast of the United States.

Professor Antonio Cortijo, from UCSB Department of Spanish and Portuguese, who will assume the presidency of the Centre and Professor Vicent Martines, Vice Chairman of the Centre and lecturer in  Catalan Studies at the University of Alicante, have made it available to Vice President for Research & Knowledge Transfer Amparo Navarro, and Vice President for Studies Planning and Training Actions Enrique Herrero. An agreement that,  the words of the latter, "is a gateway to collaboration between the University of Alicante and the University of California in many areas that begins with a very interesting project which allows us to exchange our researchers in both directions, as well as joint PhD degrees and the possibility of future undergraduate degrees".

Meanwhile, the president of the Centre for Catalan Studies at the University of California, explained that "we are interested in establishing a high level academic agreement and I believe that we are in very good hands with the University of Alicante. Futhermore, this agreement is the  stepping stone for further collaboration agreements involving both PhD and postgraduate students, as well as academic staff , both in the field of the humanities and sciences.

The creation of this centre will mean in practice the teaching of a Catalan Studies Programme for the next academic year by lecturers from the University of Alicante who will stay at the American university thanks to the yearly scholarships from the Valencia region government through the UA Cooperative Research Institute (ISIC-IVITRA).

The Centre for Catalan Studies is the result of UCSB's interest in reinforcing its commitment to teaching and research in Catalan Studies in the full extent of its language, literature and culture and the recognition in this field of knowledge of the ISIC-IVITRA Institute's leading position and the excellence of the Programme Prometeo II/2014/018 assigned to the University of Alicante.

The creation of this centre at the University of California, in Santa Barbara, aims to promote an inclusive perspective of the Mediterranean and transatlantic relations of the Catalan -speaking community within Europe and America, thus contributing to the reinforcement of other UCSB research teams that are dedicated to Mediterranean Studies, Religion, European or Comparative Literature that will contribute to increase the competences of the Linguistics area in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

During the meeting on Tuesday at the University of Alicante, the willingness to deepen the relations between the two universities was brought to light through several collaboration agreements that can be established in the future.
