Lecture by Julen Lopetegui at the University of Alicante Conference on Journalism & Sports

The University of Alicante Pedro Ferrándiz Research Chair in Sports celebrates a new edition of its Conference on Journalism and Sports that will once again gather top athletes and sports journalists at the Campus of San Vicente del Raspeig With the collaboration of Spain's National Sports Council and the newspaper As, the conference will be attended by Spain’s national football coach Julen Lopetegui, who will give a lecture on his different roles in front of Spain’s National Team.
After his lecture, a discussion panel on journalism and sport will follow. Moderated by newspaper AS Director Alfredo Relaño, it will also count on the participation of El País and AS Journalist Juan Cruz, player of the Spanish National Rugby Team Patricia García; tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero, journalist and, TV and radio presenter Olga Viza, and Director of Información newspaper Toni Cabot.
The event will take place on 24 April at the UA Lecture building II Assembly Hall and is free and open to the general public, prior registration through the website: http://www.periodismoydeporteua.es/
Sports values as social references
UA President Manuel Palomar will participate in the event, as well as Chairman of Spain's National Sports Council José Ramón Lete and General Director of Young Sports People Foundation Alfonso Jiménez. The ceremony will be moderated by Director of ‘Pedro Ferrándiz Research Chair in Sports’ Aránzazu Calzada, with Pedro Ferrándiz himself among the attendees.
As explained by the Chair director, the seminar will focus its theme "on the great power of sport to transmit its values to society, as well as the existing mechanisms of expression and transfer, and the relevant role played by the press as a joining element". The ability of sport to release emotions and feelings is well proven, "but above all, it can influence people’s attitude and behaviour, through the values it conveys: effort, improvement, perseverance, equality, respect, sportsmanship, solidarity and companionship, personal and collective success, among many others, "he explains.
The Conference on Journalism & Sports will feature the special participation of Spanish National Football Coach Julen Lopetegui, who will focus his speech on the different roles he plays within such a representative group and the analysis of the relations of the national team with the press in favour of encouraging positive values in the great showcase of the Spanish National Football Team. After his participation, a discussion panel will address the issue from the different viewpoints by athletes and journalists. Finally, an open question and answer session will follow for attendees to ask the speakers directly.
Some background on the Research Chair
The University of Alicante Pedro Ferrándiz Research Chair in Sports is an initiative that started as a place for reflection, debate and research in the field of sports. It is the first one existing in a Spanish university, and the goal is to become a national and international reference point for sports research, dissemination and training. This research chair represents a turning point in the commitment of the University of Alicante to use sports as one of the backbones of its academic and training policies.
The University of Alicante has 14 federated disciplines, emphasising on both male and female sports, to reinforce sports practice as one of its distinctive features. The promotion of sports is an essential part of our university and this Research Chair aims to serve as an incentive for recruiting students with sports interests.
Sports training, research and dissemination are the pillars supporting this Chair, which is also focused on offering lectures and courses bringing worldwide leading experts.
The academic director of the Chair is Aránzazu Calzada and the technical Director is Juan Escarré, the Spanish athlete who has worn the Spanish national team T-shirt the more times, 260 times in official games and more than 500, in non-official ones. Also, follow-up committee in which Pedro Ferrándiz himself is in charge of giving green light to the proposals that may arise.
