Alicante. Monday 17 December 2018
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings survey 1,500 higher education institutions from all over the world, based on thirteen indicators intended to cover all university activities. This year, the University of Alicante entered the Computer Science ranking for the first time, in the 501-600 band, and is among the top 20 Spanish universities overall, standing in 17th position.
The Education Sciences area also performed strongly (301-400 global ranking band, 10th place among Spanish universities).
Moreover, the Engineering and Technology studies ranked higher than in 2018 and are now in the 301-400 band, the 5th position among Spanish universities offering these studies.
The UA also featured in the THE rankings for Arts and Humanities (401-500), Economics and Business (501-600), Life Sciences (501-600), Physical Sciences (501-600), Social Sciences (601-700) and Health Sciences (601-700). "It should be noted that all fields of knowledge offered at the UA appeared in this prestigious ranking, which is all the more remarkable considering there are about 26,000 universities worldwide," Vice President for Quality Assurance and Educational Innovation Francisco Torres pointed out.
This ranking rates universities on aspects such as research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Two relevant indicators assess the reputation of teaching and research, drawing on information from surveys administered to a significant sample of academic experts.
Besides, the UA landed in the 201-250 band in the THE Young University Rankings 2018, where the same methodology is applied, but the indicators are adjusted so that only universities aged 50 years or less are listed. Only two universities from the Valencia Region appeared in this ranking, namely the Universitat Politècnica de València and the UA itself.
In the THE Europe Teaching Ranking 2018, for European academic institutions, the University of Alicante featured in the 151-200 band. This methodology uses thirteen performance indicators, seven of which are based on results of the European Student Survey, accounting for 50% of the overall score.
The survey looks at a series of key factors, including student engagement, interaction with staff, opportunities for developing skills and their views on quality of services at their institution.
