Alicante. 26 February 2018
The University of Alicante Governing Council has given its approval this morning for the implementation of the 3rd Plan for Equal Opportunities for Women and Men (PIUA) for the period 2018-2010. Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility, Inclusion and Gender Equality María José Rodríguez was in charge of presenting the proposal for the 3rd Gender Equality Plan, which aims to establish a strategic line for mediation in order to reduce the gaps that still persist between women and men in our university".
Rodríguez stressed that "this 3rd Equality Plan pays special attention to promoting greater presence of women in the degrees of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as UNESCO has recently pointed out". The Vice President explained that this plan is in line with previous plans, with an execution level of 86% and evidence of a tendency to reduce the gender gaps identified in the first report.
The 3rd PIUA maintains the seven axes of the 2nd Gender Equality Plan, with a total of 99 actions which include 16 goals, among which we highlight goal No. 4: "Promoting the involvement of men in the creation of an egalitarian society". The axes, in short, are: raising awareness, academic and research staff, access to the academic and administrative staff professional promotion, working and studying at the UA, women’s training and representation.
Gastronomy and a dual degree
The Governing Council has also approved the creation of the University Gastronomy Centre based in Denia, which will run a new UA degree in Gastronomy as well as further teaching and research activities.
The new university centre is a collaborative initiative of the University of Alicante with the council of Denia, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and aims to promote research and studies in the sector of gastronomy in the province of Alicante. The idea is to take the cuisine of Alicante to the next level as world benchmark of the Mediterranean diet. In this regard, UA Registrar Esther Algarra explained that the new centre has been conceived as an "alliance of interests" among several organisations, including and emphasising the Valencia Government through its Tourism Agency.
Finally, the UA Governing Council has approved the creation of a new dual Master’s degree in Legal Practice and Tort Law at the Faculty of Law.
