Alicante, Monday 15 October 2018

The Alicante Center for University Studies (CEU), the grounds for the current University of Alicante, was created on 4 November 1968. Both the province and the city awaited this academic institution which was inaugurated in Alicante after some complex political and administrative procedures. Now, half a century later, the University of Alicante celebrates its anniversary with an extensive activity programme to share their joy with the Alicante society.

The first and main proposal will take place on 8 November at 7 pm at the University of Alicante Museum (MUA). In order to celebrate the CEU creation, the UA organises a reunion of teachers, students and administrative staff members who were at that time serving the institution’s first graduating class.

This event will be open to people who were part of the university community at that time and, for this reason, the University of Alicante invites them to attend the event. This is why the Office for the Vice President for Students and Employment and the Office for Vice President for Culture, Sports and Languages, organisers of the activity programme, kindly request confirmation of attendance via email at alumni@ua.es or by phone at 610488974 and 600948637. Although the appointment aims to bring together the members of the CEU’s early years, the event will also host the traditional University of Alicante Alumni meeting.

University of Alicante President Manuel Palomar will preside over this reunion, with the participation of some members of the organising committee made up by Elías Alonso Dávila, Mercedes Guijarro Antón, Rosa Ana Gutiérrez Lloret, Juan Martínez Leal, Mónica Moreno Seco and José María Perea Soro, who are also part of the Democracy Archive Advisory Council. Former teachers students and members of the administrative staff will also be given the floor for a Question & Answer session.

The same context will serve to present a number of initiatives that will be held on the occasion of this event. In particular, two audio-visual productions will be screened; one on the placement of a commemorative plaque on the sculpture by Arcadi Blasco dedicated to PAES (Alicante Board of Higher Education), which will be held in the coming days, prior to the event, and another on the CEU’s history and its main actors entitled 50 años del CEU: Historia y memoria. Likewise, a homonymous book and exhibition will be presented.

Afterwards, the audio-visual documentary will be screened between the months of November and December in the UA Media Library.

The exhibition 50 años del CEU: Historia y memoria can be visited until the end of the year in the University of Alicante Museum. After that, it will move to the Alicante City UA Venue until February 2019, and as of March, it will be travelling through several UA venues in the province of Alicante. Also, the UA venue in Alicante City will host a lecture series on Spanish universities at the end of the Franco regime from 29 to 31 January.

Invitation

The University of Alicante is pleased to announce the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Alicante Centre for University Studies (CEU) and those who were directly involved in the early years of the university centre are kindly invited. The event will take place in the University of Alicante Museum (MUA), on 8 November 8 at 7 pm. To this end, the Office of the Vice President for Students and Employment has made an email (alumni@ua.es) available, as well as two phone number (610488974 and 600948637) to confirm attendance of those who were members of this institution, be them faculty or part of the administration staff, as well as those who were students in the first graduating classes.
