THE's 2019 ranking on social and economic impact places UA among the 200 best in the world in Gender Equality
This classification measures the adaptation of universities to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Alicante, Wednesday 03 April 2019
The University of Alicante is among the 200 best universities in the world in Gender Equality, according to THE, Times Higher Education ranking, which measures the social and economic impact of academic institutions based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
THE has carried out this pioneering initiative to recognise universities around the world for their social and economic impact, based on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Of all the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, Gender Equality is the most closely connected to the policies followed in universities, and in the case of the University of Alicante, is one of its priority strategic lines and an essential and differentiating element, as explained by the Vice President for Quality Assurance and Educational Innovation Francisco Torres.
In this regard, the University of Alicante has an Office for Corporate Social Responsibility and Gender Equality, as well as a unit for the only purpose of gender equality, both directed by María José Rodríguez Jaume. The Gender Equality Office was created by the UA Governing Council in January 2008, with the aim of meeting the principle of equality between women and men. In little more than a decade, three Gender Equality Plans have been approved, the last one in March 2018.
In parallel to this strategy, the UA has drawn up a Corporate Social Responsibility Plan, approved in July 2018, that makes up the strategy in which the ongoing actions and the new objectives are framed in line with the needs and expectations of the university's stakeholders. The Plan also includes the guidelines that are being considered in the area of social responsibility, within the University, regionally, nationally and internationally, as explained by the Vice President.
In this sense, Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility, Inclusion and Gender Equality María José Rodríguez stressed that placing ourselves among the best universities in the world in the development of equality policies is the recognition of a collective work carried out from the conviction that the reduction of gender gaps and the mainstreaming of the gender perspective in university governance is an indicator of quality. This is exactly THE’s impact, to place equality policies in university daily tasks.
