Alicante. Tuesday, 10 November 2020

On Thursday 12 November at 7 p.m., the University of Alicante and the Juan Gil-Albert Culture Institute open a new edition of the Contemporary Art Encounters (CAE) at the Sempere exhibition hall of the University of Alicante Museum (MUA). The exhibition celebrates its 20th edition this year and will remain open to the public until 10 January.

The exhibition itinerary shows the work of 12 artists, 8 women and 4 men, who have been selected by the jury from the more than 70 proposals submitted to this year’s call. The selected artists in this 20th edition are: María del Carmen Díez Muñoz, Tamara Jacquin, Elena Jiménez, José Luis Lozano, Miriam M. Guirao, Carlos Martínez, Ángel Masip, Imma Mengual, Perceval Graells, Luciana Rago Ferrón, Keke Vilabelda, and María José Zanón Cuenca. Ten of the selected artists are Spanishy. They are from Madrid, Valladolid, Granada, Valencia, and Alicante. Moreover, two other artists are Italian and Chilean, although both live in Madrid.

This year's exhibition is heterogeneous and covers a multidisciplinary catalogue of selected art proposals, including installations, sculptures, paintings, photographs, videos, and engravings. As CAE organisers highlighted, artists now feel freer to interact between disciplines, as well as to mix them. The collection of pieces shows a certain dichotomy between an intimate and personal vision, closer to an emotional reflection, and a social view of global relevance issues such as environmentalism, landscape transformation, feminism, the humanitarian crisis of refugees, social conflicts, or urban speculation.

Through the Juan Gil-Albert Culture Institute, the University of Alicante and the Alicante Provincial Council have been working closely together for 16 consecutive years to present a new edition of the Contemporary Art Encounters. This is an opportunity for the public to share reflections and connect with new expressive languages around creation and contemporary society. This call has also been consolidated as an excellent platform for debate and knowledge.

The jury for this 20th edition was made up of Julia Parra Aparicio, as president, Amparo Koninckx, as secretary, and the members Susana Guerrero, Remedios Navarro, María Teresa Pérez, Marina Vicente, and Valeriano Venneri.
