University of Alicante dresses up for the 2020 Social Council awards
The 24 winners paraded down the catwalk on Thursday night to collect awards for excellence and involvement with the university

The University of Alicante open-air amphitheatre next to lecture building No. 2 hosted the 4th Social Council awards gala on Thursday at a ceremony that distributed up to 24 awards in a total of 14 categories recognising excellence and involvement with the University of Alicante.
Social Council Secretary Aránzazu Calzada was in charge of conducting the ceremony, which was held outdoors with all the security measures in place. Social Council President Adolfo Utor was the first to speak to demand cohesion from society in the face of the pandemic. The UA President closed the event with a speech in which he congratulated the winners and thanked them for their collaboration with the institution in claiming the Social Council as a bridge between society and the university.
The awards are used to recognise academic performance, professional careers, sports merits, social and university involvement, volunteering, research and sponsorship at the University of Alicante.
The award for University Involvement went to the Alicante Professional Union. It was collected by its president, Fernando Candela, from Francisco Martín Irles, president of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Social Council. The UA Museum was awarded a prize on its 20th anniversary and Actiu's Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Carmen Berbegal, presented it to museum technician Remedios Navarro. The Alicante area director of Bankia, Jesús Cecilia, collected the Employability award for the entity which he received from the president of the CEV in Alicante and president of Social Council Economic Affairs Committee Perfecto Palacio. The Alumni Award for former students with an outstanding career was presented to head of the European Parliament's Young European Federalists defence strategy Alejandra Oriola, to writer Eva García Saenz de Urturi - it was collected by Manuel Cano because she was collecting the Planeta Award in Barcelona - and the traumatologist Joaquín Ferrer. It was presented by TM Real State Social Council member and Managing Director Pablo Serna, and UA Student Council President Álvaro Asencio, and doctor Marta Gascón. The Academic Performance Award for the best academic records from each faculty went to Berta Adelina Lillo, Miguel Fuentes, Álvaro Bernad, Julio Inclán, Francisco Antonio Martínez, Laura Cuadrado and Daniel Ponsoda. The university ombudsperson Cecilia Gómez was in charge of presenting this award to the wineers.
Pedro Ferrándiz was presented with the Sports Merit Award and it was collected by Luis Castillo, a member of the research chair that bears his name, from Mayor of San Vicente del Raspeig Jesús Villar. Taekwondo wrestler María José Alfocea received the individual University Sports Merit Award and the UA men's football team received the team award. MOE's chief general Raimundo Rodríguez, and Hosbec's general secretary Nuria Montes were in charge of presenting those awards. UAcompaña Coordinator María José Cabañero collected the Community Service Award from head of Alicante General Hospital Neurology Service Carmina Díaz. The Research Chair for Business Award was presented to Marjal Research Chair for Sustainable Innovation and it was collected by Social Council former president Francisco Gómez, after being presented with it by Family Business Association president Maite Antón. Labaqua won the Research Sponsorship Award. Vice President Cristina Rodes, gave it to the company's CEO, Coral Robles. The President of the Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón presented the Artistic and Cultural Sponsorship Award to Mutua Levante Foundation Board of Trustees Secretary Elena Turrión. The ONCE Foundation took home the Training Sponsorship Award, presented by Alicante Mayor Luis Barcala to ONCE Foundation Secretary General Teresa Palahí. Professor of Physical Chemistry Juan Feliu received the Research statuette from regional minister Pascual. The first Professor in Financial and Tax Law in Spain, María Teresa Soler, was awarded with the Academic Career Award presented by Adolfo Utor.
