Alicante, Wednesday 14 April 2021
The Alicante Science Park (ASP) has approved its annual accounts for 2020 with very encouraging figures that improve all indicators compared to the previous year. The innovative business ecosystem promoted by the University of Alicante (UA) is growing at a good pace and, according to its manager Olga Francés, it is doing so in a very complicated year marked by the pandemic and the strong economic crisis in our local environment. The fact that scientific and technological companies continue to grow should make us reflect on the much-needed investment in a production model based on innovation.
The figures at the end of the year in which the Science Park celebrated its tenth anniversary are very positive. The volume of business generated by the UA Science Park ecosystem has grown by 39%, from four million in 2019 to almost five and a half million in 2020. The number of companies in the ecosystem has grown to almost 30 now, and so has the business generated by all of them throughout the year.
The increase in the volume of business is also associated with two important data. On the one hand, the increase in the number of workers, who now number 195, compared to 125 in 2019, i.e. 56% more. Of these, 40% are women. On the other hand, it is also worth mentioning the investment made in R&D between 2019 and 2020, despite the difficulties that the pandemic has caused for companies to find the necessary investment. The volume of investment in R&D by companies in Alicante's innovative ecosystem remains at around four million euros.
Other interesting data that prove the good progress of the UA Science Park are the funding of more than one million euros by the companies in its ecosystem and more than half a million euros from public funding. Also important is the number of staff members dedicated exclusively to research, which is already close to 100 people, with almost half of them being PhD holders trained at the UA.
During 2020, the UA Science Park has maintained an intense activity to stimulate the innovative ecosystem of Alicante, organising relevant events, such as the secondCienciathon, a science and technology marathon, with the participation of five companies from the ASP and more than 100 students from the UA. Also, the second edition of the regional Innotransfer programme, in collaboration with the network of Valencian science parks, the participation in the organisation of the Impulso Awards to promote entrepreneurship within the UA and the Gennera programme for challenges proposed by companies to be solved by UA students.
Moreover, nearly 40 activities of all kinds have been organised, as well as webinars and conferences on several topics of interest to the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Alicante, workshops and breakfasts aimed specifically at our associated companies, meetings with different economic agents in the province of Alicante to try to bring our innovative technologies to all the companies in the province, participation in different activities of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, etc.
The UA Science Park has signed collaboration agreements to promote innovation in companies in the province with different institutions such as Pons IP, TorreJuana, Devesa & Calvo, Fellow Funders or AIJU among others.
Since the beginning of the crisis caused by the pandemic, the PCA has made available to the authorities the abilities and solutions that companies could provide at any given time. Thus, a complete catalogue of solutions was drawn up, which the companies in the ecosystem made available to the Valencian Government, and a specific forum on technological solutions to the pandemic was also held.
