Alicante, Thursday 10 June 2021
The University of Alicante has caught up today with the PhD graduation ceremony that was supposed to be taken in the 2018/2019 academic year and was cancelled due t the pandemic. The UA Auditorium has hosted the academic ceremony presided over by Amparo Navarro, in her first academic ceremony dressed up in her ceremonial attire as the University of Alicante President.
A total of 54 PhDs took part in the traditional conferment ceremony, which should have been held during the closing ceremony of the last academic year, out of the total of 194 who read their PhD theses during the 2018/2019 academic year.
In her speech, after the graduation of the new doctors of the University of Alicante, Amparo Navarro said that she was proud to be able to preside over this ceremony and to accompany PhD graduates as the UA president at such an important moment in their lives after a time full of uncertainties.
Navarro addressed the new doctors to remind them that this is the highest academic qualification that universities can award which, implies the realisation of a vocation that rarely arises in adolescence or early youth. They are vocations that are born and develop at their peak during the university years, when students decide to devote one's professional life to study, science and teaching, in the broadest sense of the word.
The laudatio was given by María Ángeles Sirvent Ramos, director of the University of Alicante Doctoral School (EDUA), who highlighted the great effort of the EDUA to adapt to the new normality and the establishment of telematic procedures for the thesis deposit with all legal guarantees. Also, the thesis defence by videoconference has proved that all this technological advance remains to make the procedures easier.
