For its contribution to global technology under equal conditions
The University of Alicante has signed its support to the proposal submitted by the CENATIC Foundation so that the Prince of Asturias Awards for International Cooperation goes to the International Community of Free Software, “for its contribution to global progress through collaborative, supportive and democratic development of software”.
The University of Alicante considers this international community worthy of the award because "it generates and shares knowledge with millions of people around the world, allowing us access to technology in terms of equality and eliminating all economic, social, cultural, linguistic or geographical barriers". The accession document, supported by the UA, considers the "profound respect for copyright" with which candidates approach their commitment "through the hard work of thousands of people around the world who voluntarily develop, disseminate, document, test, organize or translate software, constituting an extraordinary example of universal cooperation". The International Community of Free Software is made up by all persons and institutions around the world who contribute to the implementation of this model.
The bet of the University of Alicante for the open knowledge was evident in 2005 with the creation of the project COPLA (Open Knowledge and Free Software of the University of Alicante), emerged to support initiatives promoting open knowledge and the use of free software in the university setting. According to the UA Vice President for Technology and Educational Innovation, Faraón Llorens "it is not just a technological challenge but also the sharing collaborative principles, commitment and solidarity of this movement."
The CENATIC is the National Reference Center for the Application of Information and Communications Technologies based on open sources. It is a statewide public foundation within the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade emerged to promote knowledge and the use of open source software in all areas of society.
