The Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will attend the University of Alicante's closing ceremony of the Magister Lvcentinvs Programme

The closing ceremony of the University of Alicante's 2010/11 Lvcentinvs Magister Programme, scheduled for June 17, will involve the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Secretary General International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), Francis Gurry.

Gurry will be at the University of Alicante's Museum, where the closing ceremony will be held and he will give a lecture on "Intellectual property and knowledge society."

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva (Switzerland) has as its main objective the development of a balanced and accessible international property system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development safeguarding the public interest.
 

Francis Gurry

Francis Gurry was appointed as the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV)  on the 1st October 2008.

He began his career at the WIPO in 1985 in the Office of Cooperation to Development and External Relations with Asia and the Pacific. He was instrumental in creating the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and the preparation of the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution process. He has belonged to the senior management body of WIPO since 1997, first as the Deputy Director-General and, since 2003, as the Deputy General Manager in charge of patents and the PCT system, the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation, the traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources. Before joining WIPO, Francis Gurry practiced law and taught law at the University of Melbourne (Australia). He graduated in Law from the University of Melbourne and received his his doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
