Leire Pajin opens the 4th Iberoamerican Conference of Universities for Seniors

Co-organized with the UIMP and more than 300 registered participants, it will be held from 27 to 30 June
As part of learning throughout life, active and international cooperation, the University of Alicante hosts, from the 27th of June, the 4th Iberoamerican Conference of Universities for Seniors, CIUUMM 2011. The opening ceremony will be held at the Lecture Hall II at 11 am and will be attended by the Minister of Health, Social Policy and Equality, Leire Pajin, the Presidents of the University of Alicante and the International University Menéndez Pelayo's, respectively, Ignacio Jiménez Raneda and Salvador Ordonez, the Director-General for attention, participation and Employability of University Students, Mercedes Chacón Delgado and the President of the State Association of University Programs for Seniors, AEPUM and director of the Permanent University of the University of Alicante, Concepción Bru.
More than 300 delegates will participate in the fourth edition of this conference organized by the International University Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) and the State Association of University Programmes for Seniors (AEPUM), chaired by the University of Alicante. Apart from the participation of the representatives of 42 Spanish universities, it is noteworthy that more than one hundred participants are coming from various universities and educational institutions in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, as well as from various European countries such as Portugal, Italy, UK, France and Czech Republic.
The conference falls within the framework of national and international cooperation between research groups and universities with graduate programmes for the elderly (PUPMs) and educational experiences of seniors. The objective is to analyze the specific teachings for adults, understood as continuing education and throughout life, necessary to meet the challenge of healthy ageing and quality in order to consolidate a society for all ages, able to foster the inclusion of marginalized groups and social participation and reduce poverty, as well as to promote active citizenship. The interdisciplinarity and transnationality, with the multicultural component assumed, are other highlights of the conference.
All plenary sessions taking place in the Lecture Hall II of the University of Alicante Campus, will be live broadcast via the UA video streaming service. Thus, this session can be attended by all those interested who have not been able to come to Alicante. Access is provided from the link above at the scheduled times in the conference programme.
The Conference will be presided over by the Minister of Education, Ángel Gabilondo, who can not attend it due to scheduling problems. Instead, the epitome of the Ministry for Health, Social Policy and Equality, who has worked through the IMSERSO Programme with 12 scholarships for Latin American participants. Scholarships have also been awarded from the AECID Cooperation Programme, attached to the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and from the UIMP.
From the part of the University of Alicante, which is the venue of the conference, the Vice Presidents for Extracurricular Activities, for Institutional Relations and International Relations and for Cooperation have participated in the organization, as well as the UPUA, the UA Mario Benedetti Studies Centre, the University Venues in Villena and Orihuela, Bancaja, the ADDA, the Alicante Tourist Board and the Protected Denomination of Origin "Vinos de Alicante".
