The Gold Medal will be awarded posthumously to Balbino Mancheño and the Social Council's Awards for Academic Excellence will be handed out during the event.
The closing ceremony of the University of Alicante's academic year 2011/2012 will take place on Monday, 14th May, at 12 noon, at the Auditorium and will be chaired by the University President, Ignacio Jimenez Raneda.
The archaeologist and historian, Filippo Coarelli, will be awarded an honorary doctor's degree during the ceremony, a proposal from the Faculty of Arts. Professor José Uroz Sáez will act as the sponsor and perform the traditional vested laudatio.
The closing ceremony will also host the investiture of 164 new doctors in the year 2010/2011 and for the second year, the Awards for Academic Excellence will be awarded by the UA Social Council.
Ignacio Jimenez Raneda will give his last closing speech as the UA President. At the end of his speech, one of the most emotional moments for the university community will be shown with the presentation of a posthumous UA Gold Medal to Balbino Mancheño Magán, former dean of the Faculty of Sciences and the Director of the Science Park.
The UA provides this distinction to persons or institutions of outstanding reputation in the field of sciences, literature, scientific research, teaching, artistic creation, sports and solidarity, who have rendered outstanding service to the University of Alicante.
