Background

Creation

In 1997, the Office for Welfare Services was created to respond to social and educational needs of the University of Alicante's students, whose first director was Agustín Bueno Bueno, at the time lecturer of the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Alicante.

During these early years, the objectives of this Secretariat were the management of the office for community services, to provide guide lines for university student associations
and offering support to students with disabilities, covered by conscientious objectors.

In the academic year 1998-1999, it was renamed as Secretariado de Asuntos Sociales (Secretariat for Social Affairs), incorporating experts able to support the disabled and
offer psychoeducational counseling, configuring the Student Support Centre (hereinafter, SSC).

At the end of April 1999, the First Conference on Equal Opportunities was held, which marked a milestone for the intervention of representatives of disabled students themselves   who will present their needs and take part in various organisations working for equal opportunities for this group. From their findings, they developed the design of the support
programme for students with disabilities of the SSC.

During 2001-2002, the programmes presented by the Secretariat were as follows:

  • Psychological and psychopedagogical Counselling Programme.
  • Support to students with disabilities.
  • Recruitment, training and monitoring of university volunteers.
  • Student Emergency Fund.
  • Community services for conscientious objectors.

In 2003-2004, a sexological counselling programme was included into the Office for Social Affairs.

In the following year (2004/2005), Antonio Muñoz González, lecturer in the Department of Sociology I became the new Director of the Office for Work Placement and Students Support.

From this course onwards, the SSC has been consolidating its service and given it greater visibility inside and outside the University.

Some other programmes and more experts have been assigned to this Centre to meet our students' needs, and we have at present a team of seven experts and two administrative assistants, as well as the director.

Since the end of the academic year 2011/2012, the SSC is directed by Josefa Parreño Selva , senior lecturer in the Department of Marketing.
