Universities are divided into university centures in charge of management processes and academic organisation.
The Organic Law of Universities (Title II, Chapter I) establishes the designation and functions of the university centres.
The public university centres have the following designation and functons:
Faculties and Schools: in charge of organising studies and academic and administrative processes and management in roder for students to obtain an undergraduate degree or doctorate.
Departaments: in charge of teaching subjects and research in one or a number of areas of knowledge and to provide support to teachers in teaching and research activities.
University Institutes: they are centres aimed at technical and scientific research or artistic creation. They can organised and develop doctorate and postgraduate programmes and studies.
The Faculties and Schools have a main function of academically and administratively organising the official undergraduate degrees and doctorates.
Manage registration, academic records and mark issuance for students.
Prepare academic timetables, exam calendars and other academic processes related to studies.
Prepare and coordinate study plans and propose introduction of new learning activities.
Supervse the general functioning of the studies.
Promote teaching quality actions and assess activities for teaching and administration staff.
Organise and coordinate services and facilities.
All Faculties and Schools have their own management team led by a Dean in the case of Faculties and a Director in the case of Schools. In this same sense, all Faculties and Schools have an administrative secretary's office where students can carry out procedures/paperwork related to their studies.
The University of Alicante has the following Faculties and Schools that teach the following official undergraduate degrees:
Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences: teaches Undergraduate Degrees in Business Administration, Economics, Sociolog, Publicity and Public Relations and Soial Work. There are double degrees: Law-Business Administration, Tourism-Buisness Administration, Computer Engineering-Buisness Administration.
Faculty of Sciences: teaches Undergraduate Degrees in Biology, Chemisty, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Optics and Optometry, Geology and Physics.
Faculty of Health Sciences: teaches Undergraduate Degrees in Nursing and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
Faculty of Law: teaches Undergradute Degrees in Law, Criminology, Public Relations and Human Resources and Public Management and Administration. There is a doube degree: Law-Buisness Administration.
Faculty of Education: teaches Undergraduate Degrees in Child Education, Primary Education, Physical Education and Sports science. The Faculty is also in charge of the Master's Degree in Secondary Education.
Faculty of Arts: teaches Undergraduate Degrees in Hispanic Studies; language and literatures, Catalan Philology, English Studies, French Studies, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Translation and Interpreting, History, Humanities, Geography and Land Planning, and Tourism.
Polytechnic School: teaches Undergradute Degrees in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Technical Architecture, Computer Engineering, Multimedia Engineering, Engineering in Sound and Image in Telecommunications, Chemical Engineering, Robotics, Healthy Information Technology and a double degree in Computer Engineering-Buisness Administration.
Doctoral School: it organises doctorate studies.
The departments are teaching and research units in carhage or coordinating studies in one or a nuber of areas of knowledge(Organic Law of Universities. Consolidated text. Art.9)
The departments are directl in charge, among others, of organising subjects and are responsible for the teacher's teaching obligations.
Any subject taught within the study plan at the Universitty is appointed to a department which is responsible for guaranteeing its correct way of teaching.
All UA teachers belong to a department where they have an office and attend to students.
In the event there is a problem with the organisation or quality of a subject, the department must solve the possible issue. Students must address the departments in order to file complaints, provide suggestions or make claims regarding the teaching quality.
The departments are governed by a Department Council made up by teachers, researchers and administrative stadd from the department, as well as representatives of students registered in the subjects taught by the department.
The Department Council shall appoint a Director who will chair. A Secretary will also be appointed who will attest the agreements.
The University Institutes are centres dedicated to technical and scientific research or artisitc creation. They can organise and develop doctorate and postgraduate programmes and studies.
The University Institutes are in charge of developing and promoting research or artistic creation plans, as well as promoting specialisation and scientific, technical and artistic updates.
They are also in charge of organising and promoting postgraduate and specialisation studies.
The University Institues are governed by a University Institute Council made up of teachers, researchers, administrative and services staff and a representative for students registered in the studies.
The counil will appoint a Director and a Subdirector and, when necessary, aSecretary.
