The city

The hill of The Alcudia receives the footprints of diverse cultures from the Prehistory to the Islamic period. It traces back his origins to the Prehistory of which have arrived us some ceramics. It was an important territorial centre of Iberian period (¿necrópolis, sanctuary, city?) And to this phase correspond some of the most significant pieces of the art and the Iberian culture, symbolised in the famous lady, the excellent sculptures of warriors, mythological beings and deities and an important vascular group decorated that gave name to the famous pictorial style Elche-Archena or Elche I.

The birth of an authentic city produced between finals of the 2nd century and principles of the I to. C, in the frame of the process of romanización and the creation of new roads of communication. The city will initiate his career like colony of Rome, with a first foundation to the year 43-42 to.C. (Colony Iulia Ilici) and a second to the years 27-26 to.C., in period of Augusto, that adds the appellative Augusta to his roman name and that supposes a new distribution of earths in his surroundings, of the that has remained us tabulates it of Ilici in bronze, found in the late levels of a possible basurero situated in the central area of the city. This urban centre endowed of wall, forum, temples, domestic spaces and public buildings, like the complexes termales that they were engrandecidos and adapted in period Flavia.

The city will follow alive and active during all the Late Antiquity, incorporating buildings of Christian cult and necrópolis in his interior, as it corresponds to his new condition of head of a bishopric in Visigothic period, of the that conserves the famous basilica, and leaving for the numerous future archaeology footprints of the cambiante urban concept that will characterise the step to the Half Age (reocupaciones, basureros, etc)

Ilici Was protagonist in first person of the Islamic conquest a lot before the current city of Elche existed like such. It capitulated in the famous Pact of Tudmir, together with other cities of the Sureste of Hispania, in front of the new conquistadores of Arab origin-bereber, that will occupy it probably in the first decades of the 8th century until his gradual abandonment. Afterwards, remembered only in the books of irrigation like madinaqadima (the old city), transformed in first quarry, finca agricultural afterwards and archaeologic space in the actuality.

The Sector 4F

The sector F4 is one of the few spaces without excavating in the noreste of the city, where has been able to document this wide sequence. It treats of a wide sector situated between two residential complexes excavated.

The call domus 3F is in reality a conjoint complex of structures, practically superficial, excavated by Alejandro Bouquets Folqués between 1940 and 1944. In the apparently roman phase recognised an impluvium rectangular, today columnado forming an atrium of 6 x 4 columns, opened north, and connected by means of pipes of lead with an aljibe circular and a reservoir polilobulada broken by back canalisations and apparently coetáneas to the refacción of the reservoir. Although it shows and it was interpreted later like a domus unitary, diverse indications suggest that it composes of diverse phases and perhaps of diverse structures, very arrasadas, but that seal the powerful levels infrapuestos.

The domus 5F has provided one of the sequences estratigráficas wider of the Alcudia. Excavated by Rafael Bouquets Fernández in 1980 seems to correspond to an extensive domus, that presents like central core a peristilo porticado with a lake polilobulado, that desaguaba in a cloaca. Around they situate several stays, between which stand out two rectangular to both sides of his axis north–south. His incomplete plant does not allow to know his form neither his precise chronology further of his imperial ascription, perhaps severiana to tenor of the morphology of the lakes polilobulados. His reestudio shows the existence of diverse phases. Underneath of this domus imperial found a group of rooms with the known mosaic of Sailacos, perhaps coetáneas to the vascular group of Iberian ceramics of style Elche-Archena. Finally, very interesting result the phases of reocupación of this house in Byzantine and Visigothic period.

The prospección geophysics realised in 2006, in parallel to the domus, suggests the existence of a cardus that would allow to delimit an or two insulae of the orthogonal plot of the colony.
