Geographos (ISSN: 2173-1276) is an electronic journal of geography and social studies (http://web.ua.es/revista-geographos- giecryal) published by the Interdisciplinary Group of Critical Studies and Latin America (GIECRYAL) at the University of Alicante (Spain) which only spreads via the Internet and whose principal objective is to stimulate social and geographical research, debate and the clash of ideas between students of the University of Alicante and other higher education institutions in Spain, Europe and Latin America.
This international journal is published annually and articles written by students of geography and science social Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Portuguese, betting without reservation, since geography is a social and human science for an interdisciplinary critique and mainstreaming of knowledge with identical criteria which encouraged the establishment and composition of GIECRYAL . Hence, the direction, the secretariat and the editorial board of the journal consisting of members of this group who are specialists in various disciplines of social roots: geography, sociology, anthropology and social science teaching, as well as two students specialty in geography at the University of Alicante that will be renewed as complete college. The same applies to state advisory board and assessment, which is comprised of experts working in various research centers Spanish, European and Latin American and collaborate in one way or another with the GIECRYAL, although unrelated to the magazine publisher.
will be published as many articles as are produced by the students, provided they pass the review of the editorial board and anonymous evaluation of two members of the advisory and assessment. In each published work shall record the dates of receipt and acceptance of the article, although the official date of publication will be the time of final acceptance. It is further intended that the articles are stated later in the Institutional Repository of the University of Alicante (RUA) in order to achieve greater national and international dissemination.
This editorial initiative is framed as could not be otherwise, new needs and requirements arising from the Bologna Process and European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the subsequent implementation of the new university degrees in Spanish, for now that calls for reducing weight and value of the classes and to promote students' self-learning, scientific curiosity, the pursuit of their own information and the development of protected works, perhaps the time is right to create a magazine where they collect and disseminate their efforts, ie, case studies, reflections, opinions and criticisms that students be required to work and to help them become familiar with the investigation.
The rules for publication of Geograph. Digital Magazine for Students of Geography and Social Sciences and the evaluation criteria should be used for students to get used to observe and reason about geographic and social phenomena, ask questions and problems, formulate hypotheses, to adopt a theoretical framework , using an optimal methodology, choosing an appropriate approach and, ultimately, to structure a coherent, rigorous and critical sense, both in form and substance, a research which can then be published and disseminated among college students of Spanish centers in Europe and Latin America.
In this sense, Geographos want to become modestly in a vehicle to help students overcome between the teaching of geography that has traditionally acted in words of J. Huckle, as an agent of reproduction of society, because our discipline has been considered many times as an unproblematic set of facts to be memorized, so that student success has been determined largely by its ability to reproduce ideas, habits and attitudes that reproduce the status quo. It has often been valued more the description that the explanation, and when this is done is usually deterministic and tending to ignore the role that social, economic and political account in the configuration space.
Of course, the teaching objectives can not and should not be limited to the development of programs from different subjects, the use of more appropriate pedagogical techniques or the use of different instrumental resources, but must be sought before any course integral, commitment and intellectual development of students. In pursuing these objectives the teacher has often failed because it has tended to convey a lot of knowledge, usually aseptic and lack of conflict, and few ideas, ie, information rather than training, or put another way, the fund, which is what is most interesting, is often relegated in favor of form and the mechanical use of instrumental resources. It is necessary therefore to encourage pupils to scientific curiosity, self-learning, reflection, commitment to the socio-economic, cultural, environmental and political environment and globally, and even stimulate the fact think for themselves and show the benefits of teamwork, both multidisciplinary and with other geographers.
H. Capel prevents this connection, on the generally accepted ideas and to believe as true without question, while inviting us to engage in dissent, skepticism and proposed different options beyond the simple description and diagnosis, especially when trying to report and resolve the injustices and inequalities in the world.
The new way of thinking about university teaching must not only overcome the traditional views and behaviors, but also help the university does not become only place where students learn certain techniques which will then be useful in the labor market and as demand east of the business world, because from Geographos calls for the promotion of theoretical and methodological dimension geography and social sciences (not forgetting the meaning and value from direct contact with social reality) and fundamental knowledge that every college student should have, especially to the extent that those responsible for this magazine conceive education than as a public service.
GeoGraphos is associated with GeocritiQ. Ibero-American digital platform for the dissemination of scientific work (http://www.geocritiq.com/), whose objective is to convert scientific articles, already published, into journalistic articles for an international audience. It is a collective task in which the three journals of Geocrítica (Scripta Nova, Biblio 3W and Ar@cne), directed by Horacio Capel in the Department of Human Geography of the University of Barcelona are engaged.
