Objectives of the project

The study of the Peninsular peoples and their relationship with the Roman legions during the conquest of Hispania has aroused considerable interest in research in recent years, and increasing numbers of national and international teams dedicated to this field. One of the results of these investigations has been holding several congresses and scientific meetings in various universities, the last of which, the prestigious International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies, held its 20th Edition in 2006 at the University of León.

Against this background, we decided to tackle this study in the region of the South-East of Hispania, where virtually no had received attention despite its strategic importance in the development of the Roman civil wars. We start from the assumption that the distribution of the Iberians enclaves of the coast of Alicante with contexts of century BC is not due to an Iberian territorial pattern, but they are located in strategic places for maritime traffic in the Roman army and, therefore, respond to a control strategy of navigation between Dianium and Carthago Nova, either by Sertorius, either by the Senate side. They would also respond to a carefully studied policy of alliances with the ibera population. Coast during the civil wars.

Objective 1. Improvement of knowledge

Improve the knowledge of this key moment in the history of the peninsular Southeast: the affirmation of Roman military and political dominance and the consequent cultural change. It is necessary to review the current state of knowledge and overcome the traditional thesis topics.

Objective 2. Strategies for research and development models

To accomplish the above objective requires the application of the theoretical, and methodological principles in accordance with the following scheme:

Objective 3. Transfer of results and dissemination

The results will have a double scientific and social benefits. On the one hand (databases, digital cartography, etc.) analysis and study instruments generated within the framework of this project will be available to researchers both in digital format (web page) and traditional publications (monographs, participation in scientific forums, etc.). On the other hand, the results of the investigation will be transferred and will be published in the key of disclosure for use and enjoyment of the highest number of citizens.
