Susana Llorens Ortuño – Ph.D. in History – Archivist – Alicante City Council.
Contents
The history of the archives dates back at the beginning of the history of mankind, with the first signs traced by the prehistoric man on the walls of the caverns.
At first it was the oral memory, then came the written one with designs, syllabic or alphabetic codes, which led to the human primary necessity of conserving and transmitting the essential of life of the social group itself.
Another important aspect of the archive is that the documents are originally produced only with a legal-administrative objective, but not a cultural one. Over the years the legal-administrative purposes blow over and the documents acquire a cultural value.
The archive has been always considered as the place where the documents are kept. Its mission is to receive, organise, conserve and disseminate the documents.
Goals
The objective is to show the students the history of the archives since its beginnings with the antique civilizations until now.
An exiting tour where the documents are the true witnesses of the events governing the social and political life of a town, city or nation.
These issues are further dealt in the subject The unknown origin of archives: their history, documents and writing taught by the teachers Susana Llorenç Ortuño and Beatriz de Andrés Canabal, in the Permanent University of Alicante.
