The Permanent University of the University of Alicante (UA) is a scientific, cultural and social development programme of the UA which has as its aim to promote Science and Culture, as well as intergenerational relationships, in order to improve the quality of life of seniors (older adults) and encourage their participation, within their life context, as social 'dynamisers', in accordance with Articles 2.d), 108.1.c), 120.1 and 164 of the University of Alicante Statute, Art. 35 of the Generalitat Valenciana (Regional Government) Statute, Act 1/95 of the Generalitat Valenciana on training of older adults, the Preamble, 2nd and 9th paragraphs of the Organic Law 4/2007 of April 12th on Universities that modifies Law 6/2001 of December 21st on Universities, and the Agreement signed by the Generalitat Valenciana - Conselleria - Regional Ministry - of Education, Culture and Sport and the University of Alicante for the implementation of training actions addressed to the segment of Older Adults above 50 years of age.
The University of Alicante wants to facilitate the seniors’ personal and social development, independently from their residence, their income and their previous studies, and corresponding to what these persons have contributed to the society through their work and efforts.
This is the new challenge the University of Alicante’s Permanent University is going to take up with the collaboration of the Consellería de Educación, Culture and Sport of the Valencian Community Autonomous Government, various municipalities, as well as several banks and financial private institutions: offering the UPUA older adult university education programme, which seeks to meet the interests and needs of this sector of the native and resident population living in the Valencian Community.
The UPUA programme is integrated into the framework of specific university education for older adults and responds to such demands as the need for a deeper democratisation of knowledge, a reduction of social inequalities, a greater social involvement of seniors in society, and the enhancement of intra- and intergenerational relationships, all of which will help to maintain seniors’ quality of life and will additionally enlarge the range of options available for them to continue active life outside their normal working environment.
The Permanent University is addressed to any resident of the autonomous region Valencia above 50 years of age who aspires socio-cultural improvement (no previous qualifications required).
The UPUA programme, designed by teaching staff belonging to the knowledge areas existing at the University of Alicante, as well as by collaborating centres and other specialists, is an open, optional programme which offers courses designed and structured around the following areas: Humanities; Experimental Sciences; Health and Social Action; Social Sciences; and Computing, Image and Sound.
Each student enrols for the academic year comprised between October and June, in a minimum of 2 subjects with at least 40 teaching (theoretical and practical) hours - each of them equivalent to 4 credits - distributed among the general programme and the timetables of the current academic year.
In order to achieve the Diploma Senior [Senior Diploma], students will have to take 720 hours.
The complementary activities and the programme offered by the Secretariats for University Venues and for Cultural and Linguistic Promotion are excluded when it comes to count credits within the UPUA programme or achieve the accrediting Diploma Senior. Nevertheless, being enrolled in the UPUA academic programme is a sine qua non condition to take part in the above-mentioned activities. The credits obtained with these activities will be incorporated into the student academic report (at the student’s request) as Extra-Curricular Free-Choice Credits.
The preferential timetable of the classes is from 5 to 8 pm., although there are some practical subjects, activities and credits which will be developed in the mornings and on Saturdays.
Classes are distributed in 2 or 3 alternate days taking into account the general programme of the academic year and the subjects students have chosen among those offered in the UPUA programme.
The academic programme is especially oriented and adapted to older and experienced students, so that the teaching methods and the contents of the theoretical and practical sessions have specific criteria and a high level of participation.
The subject monitoring includes tutorials. Students can attend them within the schedule and place indicated by the teacher in the programme. The same way, students can consult the teacher concerning the subject contents or teaching materials on the UACloud CV and there they can also find recommended links, specific bibliography, announcements about practical works and complementary activities to the planned classes.
The evaluation is compulsory and the teaching staff will evaluate as follows:
In no case auditors will be permitted within the UPUA programme. The academic authorities will watch over the fulfilment of this rule.
The presence of “not enrolled persons and debtors” in the classrooms will be controlled by the mechanisms established for this purpose by the Office of the Vice President of Studies Planning, Training Actions & Quality Standards. Therefore, students are asked to keep the payment form sealed by the bank during the academic year, in case it is required in the classroom.
Those subjects which include field work or complementary activities can have complementary costs for the students, who choose these subjects, whenever they do not count with explicit and express financing subventions.
In order to make the most of certain subjects of the programme, some of them contain recommendations concerning the overcoming of previous contents and knowledge included in other subjects of the same field or thematic area.
The same way, there are disciplines with incompatibility among the different levels of the subjects within the areas of new technologies, modern languages, health, experimental sciences and humanities. For this purpose, the students should consult the incompatibility table transmitted along with the enrolment sending, which can also be found on the secretary’s notice board and on the web page of the Permanent University.
Within the incompatible subjects, the student should enroll in the inferior level and remain on the waiting list in the other subjects of correlative superior levels. The enrolment in incompatible subjects in the same academic year is conditioned by the approval of the inferior level and the existence of vacancies during the mentioned academic year.
Once the 72-credit (720 hours) programme has been completed, students receive the Diploma Senior, which accredits the completion of the Universidad Permanente programme.
Preferably, the classes will be taught in:
Depending on the demand and development of the practices, other spaces will be enabled through agreements with institutions. The infrastructures will be adapted to the pedagogical and teaching characteristics and requirements of the different subjects.
In the different University Venues of the province, as well as in those municipalities with which collaboration and sponsorship agreements are signed, a reduced and more specific academic programme will be offered, adapted to the demand criteria, the social and cultural environment and the availability of the qualified teaching staff necessary for the development of the programme.

From the 2004-05 academic year on, the Universidad Permanente has also initiated specialization, research, cooperation and exchange programmes within the frame of UA programmes, and also in the frame of national and international calls, like the European ones, Socrates-Grundtvig and E-Learning.
These programmes are addressed to students who have already obtained the Diploma Senior or accredit a 3rd or 4th year-title. They aim at studying in depth topics and knowledge areas by means of specialization which favours the analytical and teamwork skills and the ability to develop research projects in order to improve the quality of the educational and academic programme.
Thanks to the social situation of the last ten years, the teaching aimed at seniors is already working successfully in 54 Spanish universities, as stated in the Organic Law 4/2007, 12th of April about Universities. Its existence and development is boosted and enhanced by various universities within their capacity and under the State of Autonomies. This has triggered a momentum of the specific teaching for seniors and lifelong learning from diverse institutions, as well as from private and public entities interested in enhancing and exporting this way of learning to those geographical areas lacking universities.
In this spirit, the subjects of the Permanent University will be exported, to the maximum extent possible, to some areas far away from the city of Alicante. The University of Alicante seeks to teach in the University Venues of Benissa, Cocentaina, Biar, Orihuela, La Nucía, Xixona and Villena. Furthermore, in cooperation with the city councils of the aforesaid municipalities, UPUA subjects will be taught to national and foreign residents in rural and tourist areas where a huge population belonging to other EU countries exists. These lessons will be also taught to population from outside the European Community.
In these municipalities, in addition to the generic contents of the programme, some specific subjects focused on local inhabitants and communities will be included, in accordance with the agreements reached about those programmes with the collaborating bodies in each area, city council or venue. In this regard, we must highlight the opening towards cooperation from some foreigners’ associations rooted inside our Community that can contribute to consolidate the overall aims set forth by the programme and strengthen the cultural and intergenerational bonds between every citizen of the European Union.
The Universidad Permanente offers a wide range of Complementary Activities addressed to the whole university community (where UPUA students belong) in cooperation with the Secretariat for Cultural and Linguistic Promotion of the Office of the Vice President for Culture, Sports & Language Policies. These Complementary Activities represent an enlargement of the academic programme and favour the personal development of students, linguistic integration as well as intergenerational relationships.
They include Lectures, Seminars, Exhibitions, Theatre, Cinema, Recitals, Concerts, Workshops, Sports and a great variety of cultural activities which are offered within the annual programme to students enrolled in university subjects during both semesters. Information about the programme, enrolment conditions and time periods can be found at: http://www.veu.ua.es
Those interested in intensifying their knowledge of foreign languages can do so at University of Alicante Language Centre, which was set up in summer 1996 in order to satisfy the increasing needs to study languages of students, teachers and staff of the University of Alicante, as well as other sectors of the society. The main University of Alicante Language Centre office (email@example.com) is located at the ground floor of the Germán Bernácer building . In addition, University of Alicante Language Centre can design and develop special courses for University departments, institutes or other specific sectors according to their needs. Students can also increase and maintain their knowledge in the area of computer science and new technologies by participating in the Euconet Club, which was initiated by the Student Association of the Permanent University (http://web.ua.es/upua/aaup/) and is supported by the Vice-chancellorship of Extracurricular Activities through the UPUA. The activities take place in the mornings at the Alicante Town University Venue. Further information can be found at: http://www.universidadpermanente.com/iniciativas/euconet
