ENGLISH MEDIUM INSTRUCTION (EMI): REFLECTIONS, AWARENESS AND PRACTICE (RAP)

This course is part of the itinerari of formation of the Program of Formation for the Education in English-I3CE of the University of Alicante

REQUERIMENTS:

Participants must have at least an upper intermediate level of proficiency (B2) in the English language, having priority those that have done the Prof-teaching course 1 Digital and linguistic tools for EMI teacher.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To reflect on the principles of EMI in higher education, potential problems, and effective strategies.
  2. To become aware of intercultural, multimodal and interactive competence, diverse non-interactive and interactive teaching styles, the discourse used by lecturers to present content, connect ideas, promote interaction and to facilitate comprehension and learning in English.
  3. To practice planning, performing and evaluating lessons in EMI.

CONTENTS:

  1. Introduction to English-medium Instruction (EMI): Reflections, Awareness and Practice (2h)
    • Reflections on personal situations in terms of EMI subjects, English competence, teaching experience, intercultural competence, teacher and students’ attitudes, challenges and needs.
  2. Multimodal Classroom Communication (6h)
    • Awareness of the modes of communication in the classroom.
    • Multimodal and interactive competence in conceptual, administrative/textual and interpersonal pedagogical classroom functions.
  3. Teaching methodology and lesson planning (4h)
    • Reflections on lecturing styles and awareness of types (from traditional non-interactive to the flipped classroom).
    • Planning and preparing mini-lessons. (10h virtual)
  4. Mini-lessons (8 h)
    • Reflections on criteria to evaluate ‘the what’ and ‘the how’ of the mini-lessons.
    • Individual participants will carry out mini-lectures and classmates will work in pairs to formulate and report constructive comments on peers’ mini-lessons based on one of the evaluation criteria in Morell (2015). The mini-lessons will be recorded in class and participants will be given a copy for self evaluation.
    • Final reflections and evaluations of EMI interactive lecturing (Mindmaps)

METHODOLOGY:

This workshop, which will be held in English, will make use of varying class dynamics (i.e. pair work, group work, interactive lectures, and individual mini-lessons). Participants are expected to be actively involved and to put the learned communication strategies into practice.

EVALUATION:

Active participation during, at least, 80% of class time.

Preparation and performance of a mini-lesson.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Duración: 30 horas (20 presenciales y 10 no presenciales).

Modalidad: mixto.

Número de plazas: 20, otorgadas por riguroso orden de entrada del formulario de inscripción online habilitado en esta página dentro de cada uno de los colectivos a los que prioritariamente vayan dirigidos los cursos y el Plan de Igualdad de la UA.

Lengua vehicular: inglés.

Plazo de inscripción: del 5, a partir de las 10.30 horas, al 13 de diciembre.

 

Fechas, horario:

  • 7, 8, 9, 14 y 15  de enero, de 9.30 a 13.30 horas.

Lugar de realización: aula GB/0001, edificio Germán Bernácer

ADMITTED STUDENTS:

El ICE comunicará a través de correo electrónico a todas las personas inscritas el 18 de diciembre la admisión o no en el curso que hayan solicitado.


Aquellas personas que, en caso de no asistir al curso, no lo comuniquen a la Secretaría del ICE antes de que comience, no podrán participar en ningún curso organizado por este Instituto en el año en curso.
