REQUERIMENTS:

Participants must have at least an upper intermediate level of proficiency (B2) in the English language, having priority those that have done the Prof-teaching Course 1. Digital and linguistic tools for EMI teacher and Course 2. English Medium-Instruction (EMI): Reflections, Awareness and Practice (RAP)

OBJECTIVES:

  • To demonstrate written fluency of the language for specific course programs.
  • To observe EMI classes in a discerning manner to identify and describe teaching methods and strategies in teaching EMI classes using guided observation rubrics.
  • To reflect on one’s own teaching methods and strategies in teaching EMI classes using guided reflection rubrics.
  • To teach an EMI class in a specific area (using English at a B2-C1 level).
  • To promote communities of EMI practice.

CONTENTS:

  • Session 1. (3 hours) Designing and writing course programs. The correlation between language and the alignment of course programs will be presented. Participants will work on the language for stating: objectives, competences, methodology, contents and assessment in EMI course programs. Students will be asked to revise a course program that will be given in English. Online Activity: Students review one of their EMI course programmes and send in through Moodle. (2 hours)
  • Session 2. (2 hours) Peer observation of teaching. An introduction to the methods of observation, and reflection for EMI practice will be presented. Participants will do a variety of observation and reflection activities before being presented with an observation and reflection rubric on Moodle. Students will have approximately two weeks to attend two EMI lectures for observation and reflection on EMI practice. Activity 1: Attendance to two lectures given by two different professors in the field of speciality from the respective faculties. (2 hours). Online Activity 2: Online reflection of 2 sessions of the class observation (guided questions and open observation on Moodle). (2 hours)
  • Session 3. (2 hours) Debriefing of the observation and reflection sessions on EMI practice. Participants will a share information which includes: experiences, questions, recommendations/suggestions based on the class observations. Participants will also design/plan an individual EMI class session taking into account language, strategies, resources, etc. Online Activity: preparing EMI lecture using guide on Moodle (2 hours)
  • Session 4. (3 hours) Presentation, feedback and assessment. In small groups, each participant delivers a 20-25 minute mini-lecture/presentation in their own field of speciality. This activity must be planned in advance and visual aids may be used. After the lecture, the participant may be asked questions. Peer feedback online will be done for each presentation. The lecture is video-taped, rubrics are used for assessment and additional feedback is given. A previously organised calendar of dates will be made available for this activity and there will be two simultaneous presentation groups on the same day.
  • Session 5. (2 hours) Networking session with the course participants and the observed EMI lecturers to promote the establishment of EMI communities of practice.

METHODOLOGY:

This workshop, which will be held in English, will make use of varying class dynamics (i.e. pair work, group work, interactive lectures, and tasks). Participants are expected to be actively involved and to put the learned communication strategies into practice. 

EVALUATION:

Active participation during, at least, 80% of class time, active participation on the online module and the completion of the required assignments/activities.

During the period of March 5th and March 15th, participants will observe three EMI lectures online.

Aquellas personas que, en caso de no asistir al curso, no lo comuniquen a la Secretaría del ICE antes de que comience, no podrán participar en ningún curso organizado por este Instituto en el año en curso.
