The Other Europe. Eastern Europeans and Safavid Communities in Spain and Its Wider World. (State of the Art and Lines of Research)
Euroest (The Other Europe: Eastern Europeans and Safavid Communities in Spain and Its Wider World) and the Generalitat Valenciana (AORG/2016/098) will sponsor this session to be held at the University of Alicante, Spain (10-11 November 2016). Euroest is a coordinated scientific project (Complutense University of Madrid and University of Alicante), of the Government of Spain (MINECO). The Seminar is financed by the Conselleria d’Educació, Investigació, Cultura i Esport de la Generalitat Valenciana).
The International Seminar highlights new approaches and methods for the study of Easter Europeans and Safavid Communities in Spain, Portugal, and its Wider World. The concepts of “Eastern” foreigners and the Spanish Monarchy should be interpreted broadly, here since the session hopes to discuss the presence, the exchange and acculturation of members of the Safavid Dynasty, Caucasians, and others Eastern nationalities, particularly as these groups find fertile ground close to the court doing from trade to go-between. The concept of foreigner that occurred in the Spanish territories crossed a wide range of boundaries. Foreigners, particularly the Eastern foreigners, not only changed from nationalities to another, but also crossed political, cultural, and social borders to inserted into a new framework.
Since the previous Scientific Meeting in Madrid (2015) we had a setting of different realities to analyse what we defined as “the other Europe”. Foreigners crossed confessional lines when as Muslims or Christians entered in the Catholic Spain. The unwritten analysis of their lives shows different forms of becoming a national of the Spanish Monarchy. Most of them received royal patronage from the Spanish court. This session seeks to highlight new ways that scholars are examining the Eastern Europeans and Safavid Communities in Spain. The concept of Eastern Europeans here is meant to be understood broadly and the session hopes to have a wide range of languages represented in order to promote discussion of this field and its future.
