Resumen: We show how a few basic assumptions on the behaviour of socially interacting pedestrians may lead to the development of a mathematical model of their dynamics. Namely, by assuming that the pedestrian try to establish a position that maximises comfort both in locomotion and social communication, we express their dynamics through a potential function. The model can be solved analytically and correctly predicts the statistical properties of small pedestrian groups. The model can be extended to account for changing environmental conditions such as crowd density, and adapted to different kinds of social interactions (e.g. groups of friends, colleagues, families). The model may also be implemented as a component of a simulator to improve its ability of reproducing realistic crowd behaviour.
Bio: Francesco Zanlungo obtained his Master in Physics from Milan University in 2002, and his Ph.D. in Physics from Bologna University in 2007. He was a post-doc researcher at Bologna University from 2007 to 2009 and a researcher at ATR-International Kyoto from 2009-2015 and 2016-present. In 2015-2016 he held a permanent position as Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at Kingston University London, from which he resigned for family reasons. His research focuses on the mathematical and computational study of Complex Systems, and in particular of pedestrian crowds.
