University Master's Degree in Spanish and English as Second Languages/Foreign Languages


Admission profile

In accordance with the course contents and objectives,this Master’s Degree is especially suitable for students and professionals who hold a degree or diploma which has provided them with a linguistic training (Language and Literature, Linguistics, Foreign Language Teaching, Modern Languages, etc.), particularly if this was applied to Spanish and/or English, and those  interested in advanced, specialised training in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages.

Students and professionals holding a degree or diploma in other areas who are interested in acquiring an advanced training in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages may also be admitted to the course.


Entrance requirements

According to the Regulations of the University of Alicante, the following requirements must be complied to have access to official taught Master’s degrees:

  1. To be in possession of a SPANISH OFFICIAL GRADUATE DEGREE CERTIFICATE or other issued by an institution of higher education  within the EHEA (European Higher Education) that enables the holder to have access  to Master’s degrees in the issuing.
  2. To be in possession of an officially approved  FOREIGN HIGHER EDUCATION DEGREE CERTIFICATE that had been recognised as equal to the degree that allows access to the requested studies.
  3. To be in possession of a UNIVERSITY DEGREE CERTIFICATE obtained in a University or Higher Education Institution of COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE EHEA, without the prior approval of their studies. In this case, the following should be considered:
    • Non- recognised degree certificates shall require a technical report showing an equivalence statement issued by the University of Alicante (ContinUA – Continuing Education Centre), for which the corresponding fee should be paid.
    • Access through this way does under no circumstances imply prior official approval of the holder’s degree certificate, nor its recognition for purposes other than studying a master's degree.


Admission criteria

Where demand exceeds the number of places available, the Master’s Academic Committee will select applicants according to the following criteria:

  1. Degree related to language studies: 2 points
  2. Other degrees: 1 point
  3. Overall academic record: 2 points
  4. Specific academic record: 1 point
  5. Curriculum Vitae (training courses related to the contents covered in the Master’s Degree course, experience of activities related to the same, command of other languages, etc.): maximum 2 points.

Since the Master’s Degree course offers three specialisation routes, Spanish L2/FL, English L2/FL and Spanish and English L2/FL, a prerequisite for admission onto the course, according to the specialisation route selected, is:

  • To be a native English speaker, or hold certificates accrediting a B2,C1 or C2 level of English
  • To be a native Spanish speaker, or hold certificates accrediting to aptitude in Spanish (B2, C1 or C2; DELE Intermediate, Advanced, etc.).

Applicants who wish to study this Master’s Degree course are required to have level B2 in their  second language.  This level is considered a prerequisite for admission to the course, and is essential if students are to be able to successfully complete the subjects and courses taught on the course.

In the case of non-native speakers, officially recognised accreditation of knowedge of their second language may be demonstrated by one of the following:

  1. Officially recognised certificates (DELE or CELU for Spanish; Cambridge or TOEFL for English).
  2. Academic certification accrediting successful completion of at least 18 credits in a foreign language as part of the applicant’s university studies.
  3. Successful completion of the Master’s Degree course levels test.

The board responsible for the Master’s Degree will set an objective levels test for applicants who are unable to provide official accreditation of their knowledge in English and/or Spanish.  The board responsible for assessing each language (whether Spanish or English) will be comprised of two of the Master’s Degree course teaching staff with experience in assessing communicative competence.

This test will focus on communication, and will include the skills identified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).  It will be supervised by expert teaching staff from the Officially Recognised Master’s Degree course in Teaching Spanish and English as Second/Foreign Languages.

The assessment criteria and methodology for the entire test will be based on a B2 level of communicative competence, in accordance with the Framework directives (CEFR) 21, which state that a competent speaker at this level should demonstrate:

  • RANGE: Has a sufficiently wide range of language to provide clear descriptions and express opinions on general topics without pausing to search for vocabulary, and is able to use complex clauses to this end.
  • ACCURACY: Demonstrates a relatively good degree of grammatical control.  Does not produce errors which obscure meaning, and self-corrects most errors.
  • FLUENCY: Is capable of producing contributions without much hesitation, although may pause to search for appropriate structures and expressions.  Very little extended hesitation.
  • INTERACTION: Initiates discourse, responds appropriately, and ends the conversation at the appropriate moment, although not always elegantly. Participates in discussions on familiar topics, expressing understanding and inviting others to participate, etc.
  • COHERENCE: Uses a limited number of cohesive devices to produce clear, coherent discourse, although may display a level of nervousness if the intervention is extended.
  • LISTENING COMPREHENSION: Understands extended discourse and speech, and can even follow complex arguments when the topic is relatively familiar. Understands most television news reports and current affairs programmes. Understands most films where actors use standard speech.
  • READING COMPREHENSION: Is capable of reading articles and reports concerning current affairs in which the authors adopt definite positions or points of view.  Understands contemporary literary prose.
  • INTERACTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION: Can participate in a conversation with relative fluency and spontaneity, permitting normal communication with native speakers.  Is able to take an active part in debates on current affairs, explaining and defending his or her point of view.
  • SPEAKING: Is able to describe a wide range of topics related to his or her area of specialisation clearly and in detail.  Can explain a point of view on a topic, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of options.
  • WRITING: Is capable of writing clear, detailed texts on a wide range of topics related to his or her interests.  Can write essays or reports, transmitting information or presenting reasons which support or contradict a determined point of view.  Is able to write letters which highlight the importance the writer gives to determined events and experiences.

Students who intend to study for an officially recognised Master’s Degree at the UA should complete pre-enrolment in accordance with the guidelines and deadlines specified annually.

Pre-registration will be exclusively carried out online by filling in the form available for this purpose.

Following publication of the final list of those admitted to the course, an email containing a user password will be sent to successful applicants, enabling them to enrol via the Campus Virtual in accordance with the guidelines and deadlines specified annually.

Credit recognition and transfer

Credit recognition

  • Recognition is understood as the acceptance of credits -by a university- which have been obtained in official courses, in the same university or a different one and counted for the purpose of obtaining an official degree. Likewise, credits taken in other official higher education courses or in university courses leading to the awarding of other degrees, as referred to in Article 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007, of 12 April, which modifies Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December, on Universities, may be recognised.
  • Accredited work and professional experience may be recognised as credits for the student’s official degree, provided that they are related to their degree content.

Credit transfer

  • The transfer of credits refers to the credits that do not led to the awarding of an official degree and have been added to the student’s record and official academic documents accrediting the courses passed by each student previously, in the same university or a different one. The transfer of credits requires the prior admission of the student to the corresponding degree.
  • The modules, subjects or courses transferred to the student’s academic record corresponding to the new undergraduate degrees will not be taken into account for the calculation of the point-system assessment.
  • In the case of simultaneous studies, the credits therefor achieved will not be transferred, unless they are eligible for recognition or the student renounces to such simultaneity due to the student’s withdrawal from the studies.

Master’s credit recognition

  1. At the discretion of the relevant Master’s Academic Committee, provided for in Article 20, credits from official courses taken in this or other universities may be recognised for as long as they are related to the Master’s degree for which credits are eligible for recognition.
  2. Likewise, students who have completed partial PhD studies within the framework of the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998 or previous regulations may request recognition of credits corresponding to courses taken during the teaching period of these PhD degrees.
  3. Recognition must be requested to the Committee for Credit Recognition and Transfers and Academic Records Assessment of each university centre. The committee, where appropriate due to the complexity of credit recognition, may request the advice of the Academic Committee of the relevant Master's degree.
  4. Admission and registration rules and instructions will establish the procedure and the documentation to be submitted for the application for credit recognition.


Credit recognition for undergraduate, Master’s and PhD degrees


Recognition of credits obtained in official studies according to previous university regulations:

In the case of credits obtained in UA official degrees regulated by the Royal Decree 1497/1987, the recognition is achieved taking into account the table for credit adjustment of those degrees regulated by Royal Decree 1393/2007 and the Royal Decree 861/2010  to be included in each report required to apply for the verification of the University of Alicante degree.

In the case of credits obtained from other official degrees, they can be recognised by adapting the knowledge associated to subjects or courses taken by the student and those included in the study programmes meeting the following criteria:

  1. that the number of credits, or where appropriate hours, is at least 75% of the number of credits or hours of the subjects for which credit recognition is requested, and
  2. obtain, at least, 75% of the content of the subjects for which credit recognition is sought.


Recognition of the credits obtained from the study programmes in force and non-official degrees:

Credits can be recognised taking into account the adjustment of the skills and knowledge acquired by the student from other modules, subjects and courses and from those included in the study programmes or cross-curricular courses that meet the following criteria:

  • that the number of credits is at least 75% of the number of credits of the subjects for which credit recognition is requested.
  • that contain, at least, 75% of the content of the subjects for which credit recognition is requested.
  • that confer at least 75% of the skills of the subjects for which credit recognition is requested.

As for undergraduate degrees, the recognition of credits must also meet the following criteria:

  • If the undergraduate degree to which the student intends to gain access belongs to the same branch of knowledge, the credits corresponding to core subjects of that branch are eligible for recognition, with the original name, credits and mark.
  • If the undergraduate degree to which the student intends to gain access belongs to a branch of knowledge other than the original, the credits corresponding to core subjects of that new branch are also eligible for recognition.
  • In any case, the credits corresponding to the final-year undergraduate project and the Master's final project cannot be recognised.


Recognition of previous work and/or professional experience:

  • Accredited work and professional experience can be also recognised with credits that will count towards obtaining an official degree, provided that they confer at least 75% of the competences of the subjects eligible for credit recognition.

To be taken into account:

The number of credits allocated to work or professional experience and to non-official university studies cannot exceed, as a whole, 15 % of the total credits making up the curriculum. The recognition of those credits cannot be counted for the purpose of the student’s point-system assessment.

Notwithstanding the above, credits from UA-only degrees may, exceptionally, be subject to recognition in a higher percentage or, where appropriate, be subject to recognition in their entirety provided that the corresponding UAdegree has been phased out  and replaced by an official degree.


Recognition of credits in mobility programmes:

Students who participate in national or international mobility programmes signed by the University of Alicante, while studying in other higher education institutions, will obtain full recognition by means of a learning agreement established before their departure. Likewise, credits completed through official courses regulated by inter-university agreements will be recognised if they specifically state so. In both cases, a report from the Centre or University Commissions will not be necessary, as such recognition is subject to a prior agreement.
